The iconic New York poet and punk rocker Jim Carroll has passed away.

A short message was posted to his website by Cassie Carter that read, "I am very sad to let you know that Jim Carroll died on September 11, 2009. He was at his desk working when he passed away. Plans for memorial services, etc., are still in progress."

In addition to his numerous volumes of poetry and two books, Jim had his own band, simply called the Jim Caroll Band. He also read a passage from his most well known book, The Basketball Diaries, on the Rancid track "Junkie Man," from their album ...And Out Come The Wolves, the title of which was taken from The Basketball Diaries.

Throughout the years, Jim remained a constant presence on the New York poetry scene. Almost every year, he would partake in the St. Mark's Annual New Year's Day Marathon at the St Marks Church and his readings will be sorely miss for years to come.
