Two nights ago it was Springsteen in Asbury Park and last night it was Morrissey at Webster Hall. This being the second of his three Manhattan shows (he played the 600 capacity Bowery Ballroom on March 21st and hits Carnegie Hall tonight), the Mozzer sounded in exceptional voice, while delivering an okay performance. For some reason I felt that he didn't like the venue, once even asking, "Where are we? Westchester?"
Well the man who calls himself "a myth" found strength from the crowds high energy and excellent reception to his classic catalog, which you can say includes You Are The Quarry, where "Irish Blood, English Heart" and "First of the Gang to Die" were greated with as much enthusiasm as "This Charming Man", "How Soon is Now", "Ask" and "The World is Full of Crashing Bores."
The highlight of the show though was "Death of a Disco Dancer," which brough the house down. What kept the show from being a truly remarkable show, as, say, compared to his Apollo Theatre residency, was the surprisingly amount of material from the last two albums that came off as mere filler and the odd pacing of the setlist.
