POLITICAL JUNK | Hillary Clinton Is Killing The Democratic Party

Hillary Clinton is a herpes on the Democratic parties vagina. I am so disgusted by her, her constant lies and her Cheneyesque staff.

At er this weekend's farce of a ruling that seated Michigan and Florida delegates even though they clearly broke the rules and have now punished those individuals who played by the rules and stayed home during the primaries. Seriously, how do you count Michigan where Obama wasn't even on the ballot because he adhered to the party rules?

She keeps saying that she's winnng the popular vote and that every vote should count but she doesn't include caucaus' in her count because then Obama would be leading by over 200,000 votes.

With Michigan and Florida now seated, Obama's magic number is 63, Hillary's is 241. Not even close.

Hillary and her staff have made it clear that she is fighting the parties ruling on Michigan (they're upset that delegates are being seated for Obama) and is going to take her failed campaign to the convention in August

She is looking to either steal the nomination or completely ruin the party. Never has a campaign been more self-centered and self-serving. It's her and her delusional supporters who will be responsible for putting McCain in the White House. Fuck Hillary. I don't even want her as my Senator anymore. Hillary has done everything in her power to make sure that when she is forced out of the race, and my guess is that will be the only way to get her out of the race, that the party will be ripped apart and that her supporters will never back any other Democrat. As far as party unity is concerned, she is a party of one. It's all about her..........

PRINCE | Private Bookexpo Show in Los Angeles

Who says that the publishing industry is for nerds. Over the weekend, the book industry took over Downtown Los Angles for Bookexpo America, its annual convention. The big party of the weekend wasn't the New Yorker's annual bash or PGW's party. Rather, it was a private party in the Hollywood Hills home of Prince!

And yes, he did an hour and half set starting at 1:30am for the 300 or so guests. The set included mostly covers, all which sounded awesome. Come on, Prince covering The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, etc. It was amazing.

Cameron Diaz, Seth Rogan and Olivia Newton-John were among the various publishing industry folks who got one of the lucky tickets to the party.

The party was to help create buzz for his upcoming book, 21 Nights, which is coming out in September through Atria................

KURT COBAIN | Courtney Claims His Ashes Were Stolen

This is super fucked up:

The ashes of legendary grunge musician Kurt Cobain have been stolen, according to his distraught widow Courtney Love.

The Nirvana frontman's ashes were taken from Love's Los Angeles residence, she said.

Cobain's ashes had been stored in a pink bear-shaped bag, along with a lock of his hair.

Clothes and jewellery were also taken from Love's home.

Love said she was horrified by the theft and was now suicidal.

"They were all I had left of my husband," said the Hole singer.

"I can't believe anyone would take Kurt's ashes from me. I find it disgusting and right now I'm suicidal. If I don't get them back I don't know what I'll do."

The majority of Cobain's ashes were scattered near his Washington home and at a Buddhist temple, with Love keeping the rest.

I hope she didn't just get fucked up and pull a Keith Richards......

BO DIDDLEY | In Memoriam, 1928 - 2008

bo.JPG
Bo Diddley has passed away. The man is one of the most influential rock and roll and blues performers of all time and personal favorite of mine. For my money, you can't beat "Hey Bo Diddley", "Who Do You Love" and "I'm A Man" as three of the greatest rock n' roll songs of all time.

Diddley was born on December 30, 1928, taught himself to play the music of Muddy Waters and formed his first band, The Hipsters, in 1951.

Always a punk at heart, Diddley was one of the first artists to give Ed Sullivan a big fuck you when he refused to perfom a cover song and instead busted into a smoking version of his own "Bo Diddley." He was immediately banned from the show forever.

On a personal note, we were in the negotiations with Bo Diddley to headline our 2006 CMJ Music Marathon party with The Thermals, but he backed out due to illness. I was a real fan of his music and his public persona. He will be missed. Bo knows........

RADIOHEAD | Capitol's Revenge (iTunes, Best Of)

On the same day that Capitol is releasing its unauthorized Best of Radiohead CD, Double CD, Vinyl and DVD packages (the DVD is actually worth it), the band's formal label have also somehow gotten the entire Radiohead catalog up on iTunes.

Radiohead has always said they don't want their albums posted on iTunes unless they are sold as complete albums. Well, they're now posted on iTunes to purchase by song.

Has Capitol just given Radiohead the big fuck you?

POLITICAL JUNK | Obama Officially Wins Dem Nomination

obama1.JPG
Senator Barack Obama made history last night by becoming the first official African-American to be nominated by a major party for the office of President of the United States of America.

The Democratic candidate gave a rousing speech in St Paul, Minnesota, the same venue which will host the Republican Convention in August. He spent the first part of his speech working to unify and welcome Hillary Clinton supporters. He acknowledged her with great respect and the sold out arena gave Hillary lots of love back. When he talked about how passing universal healthcare is a top prioirity and how he will be working with Hillary to make it happen, the room exploded with applause.

As for Hillary, she gave an unsurprising speech in which she a) talked a lot about herself (notice how much she said "I" or "me" or referred to herself in the third-person), b) asked her supporters for more money to pay her $20 million personal debt, c) didn't acknowledge that Obama won the nomination, d) didn't concede, e) lied about winning the popular vote, and f) tried to position herself as the only possible Vice President nominee. Also, anytime she mentioned or alluded to Obama, her audience booed the presumptive nominee and started chanting "Denver! Denver! Denver!"

Here's the thing, Hillary did have surprising win in South Dakota. Granted she spent the last week campaigning hard in the state, while Obama only spent a day or two shaking hands. Still, seeing her win was an obvious signal that the Democratic party is still fiercely split amongst these two candidates. But with Obama, hitting the magic number of delegates, the time has come (it actually came February 5th, but...) for Hillary to get in line behind her parties candidate.

And whoever had McCain give a big speech on this evening should be fired. He sounded like a Great-Grandparent reading a bedtime story to toddler. He also said the word "change" about thirty-five times. He also used two Reagan "jokes" about being too old against a candidate to young............

POLITICAL JUNK | Hillary in Debt + Obama Tells DNC To Not Take Lobbyist Money

On Saturday, Hillary Clinton will do something she should have done on February 5th, which is concede to Barack Obama. Since February 5th, it was obvious that she had lost, but she stayed in the race to prove (to herself?) that she is a winner and that she is very, very popular. And she is, but she never had a chance of catching up to Obama.

But she proved her point, whatever the point may be and now she will officially suspend her campaign. Mind you, she isn't shutting her campaign down. The reason? She is desperate to raise more money to pay off her more than $30,000,000 of debt ($11 million of which is taken from her own pocket), all incurred after her campaign first went into debt in mid-February.

So guess who's going to be paying off her debt? That's right, Barack Obama's campaign and the DNC! That's $30 million that could go towards winning the White House, or helping various Democrats win House, Senate, Governor seats. Instead, Hillary will likely be pulled out of debt by the very people she spent four unnecessary months trying to ruin.

And she wants to be Vice President.

Meanwhile, Obama has put his foot down with DNC and I'm already liking what he's doing:

"The DNC and the Obama Campaign are unified and working together to elect Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. Our presumptive nominee has pledged not to take donations from Washington lobbyists and from today going forward the DNC makes that pledge as well," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. "Senator Obama has promised to change the way things are done in Washington and this step is a sure sign of his commitment. The American people's priorities will set the agenda in an Obama Administration, not the special interests."

R.E.M. | Johnny Marr Joins For "Fall On Me"

On Thursday night, R.E.M. continued their Accelerate U.S. tour in St Paul, Minnesota. That's the same venue in which Obama accepted the Democrat Presidential nomination just days earlier.

R.E.M. was caught between Barack and a hard rain. So singer Michael Stipe knew exactly what to do Thursday night at Xcel Energy Center.

“I’ve been busting out to say this,” he told the crowd a half-hour into the nearly two-hour set. “Something historic happened in this building two nights ago. Barack Obama claimed the nomination for president, and you people put him there.”

The super energized R.E.M.were treated to a very special encore surprise when Johnny Marr, who is still playing with Modest Mouse, joined the Athens trio for te classic "Fall On Me."

So awesome. I hope they join foreces in New York City.........

POLITICAL JUNK | 40 Years Since RFK Assassination

rfk.jpg
It was on June 6, 1968, that New York Senator and likely Democratic Presidential nominee Robert F Kennedy was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after he won the California primary.

I highly recommend Robert Kennedy and His Times by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. It's a fascinating look at how a politician can transform from a naive boy to a brave leader.

As of today, New York State has renamed the Triborough Bridge the RFK Bridge.

POLITICAL JUNK | Bush Cronie Gets $11 Million Contract For Job He Already Failed At

When Tommy Thompson was President Bush's secretary of the Health and Human Services Department, he was widely critized by New York lawmakers, unions and just about everyone (right and left of the aisle) for not doing enough to help and moniter the health of workers at the World Trade Center after the September 11th attacks.

Now, guess what?

Thompson's private company has won an $11 million contract to treat some of those same workers — the latest twist in a fitful government effort to determine how many people were made ill by the toxic debris — and to care for them.

The contract awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is aimed at tracking the health of between 4,000 and 6,000 workers who live outside the New York City area, where a separate health monitoring program is in place. The CDC is part of the Health and Human Services Department, which Thompson headed in Bush's first term.

Disgusting................

POLITICAL JUNK | Hillary Finally Concedes

hillary_Concedes.jpg
On Saturday afternoon, Hillary Clinton finally conceded the Democratic Presidential nomination to Barack Obama.

Her speech started off pretty poorly, but then she shifted gears and gave Obama a sincere endorsement. It seems she tried to fit a bunch of different topics into her final campaign speech. She did work hard to get her supporters to back Obama, but most of it was about herself and how wonderful she is and how she's brilliant and blah blah blah.

That was always the biggest difference. Obama talked about everyone. Clinton talked about herself. Obama said "We are the ones we've been waiting for." Hillary said, "I cracked the glass ceiling." As if Obama didn't as well.

Beyond that, the speech actually was one of Hillary's best in that it was her most openly liberal. She came across as a true feminist, she actually said "gay" (a word she had avoided troughout the campaign unlike Obama) and she talked about unity and working for a better tomorrow. A theme she should have based her entire campaign on instead of her Rove-esque approach to campaigning.

In the end, Hillary was able to keep the spotlight on herself for a bit longer. The best thing for Clinton to now do is step into the background and let Obama run his national campaign.

On the Republican side, the GOP just launched a new website called "Clinton vs Obama," which hopes to let Hillary's words do all their dirty work.

VIRGIN MEGASTORE | Loses Time Square Location

Another bad sign for the music industry. One of the biggest music stores in America just lost their flagship location......

The Virgin Megastore in Times Square, that behemoth depository of all things entertainment at the crossroads of the world, will be shuttered in the first quarter of 2009, according to reports.

Vornado, the company that owns the property, is forcing out the struggling chain so that it can up the rents on a new tenant, according to Reuters.

Virgin pays $54 a square foot in an area where rents can easily fetch $700, an executive vice president at Vornado told Reuters.

The chain's Union Square location should also vanish early next year, a victim in part of escalating rents.

OBAMA | Fox Calls Pound "Terrorist Fist Bump" & The Ongoing Smear Campaign

One of the most disgusting aspects of the 2008 Presidential Campaign has been the Republican smear campaign to get Obama labeled a Muslim terrorist. Sadly, it's working.

When Faux News referred to Michelle Obama's endearing victory gesture as a "terrorist fist bump," it was just another maneuver the right-wing has used to get Americans scared of the Democratic candidate.

People have already made a big deal that his middle name is Hussein or that his last name sounds like Osama (just about every Republican has "accidentally" slipped and said that).

What's really amazing and pathetic is that this nasty ploy is working! A lot of people actually believe that Obama is a Jihadist plant. They believe that Obama spent six years at a terrorist training camp. They believe he wants to destroy Israel and America. The amount of sick email forwards that I get from my family and family friends, from Israel to Florida to Upstate New York, is unbelievable! And they all are different version of these gross lies.

Every single one of the rumors put forth by some crazy right-wing organization like Fox News or Town Hall has been easily discredited, but the damage continues as the lies continue long after they've been discredited. How can people be so naive? Are old Florida Jews really that stupid or are they using it to deflect from being racists? I know enough old Florida Jews that won't vote for Barack simply because he's a black man, but even then, why do they continue to propagate the Muslim terrorist rumors?

Is this really going to be the biggest hurdle for Obama to win the nomination?

McCAIN | The Family Values Candidate's First Wife

The Presidential nominee who has a major issue with gay men and women getting married, because it degrades the sacred bound of marriage, is of course the nominee that left his first wife and was strongly rumored to be cheating on his second wife with a lobbyist.

While I don't fault most anyone for getting divorced as it is a sad, but sometimes necessary resolution to bad marriages, I do take issues with hypocrites that put marriage as something that is only for straight men and women and make marriage some religious judgement. If it is a religious judgement, then no state or federal offices should give out "marriage liscence" as it violates the seperation of church and state.

Since McCain wants marriage to be a campaign issue, let's hear from his first wife:

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. ‘I have no bitterness,’

she says. ‘My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce.

‘My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.’

Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

McCain was then earning little more than £25,000 a year as a naval officer, while his new father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was a multi-millionaire who had impeccable political connections.

H. Ross Perot, a billionaire Texas businessman, future presidential candidate and advocate of prisoners of war, paid for her medical care.

Through Ross Perot, he met Ronald Reagan, then Governor of California. A sympathetic Nancy Reagan took Carol under her wing.

But already the McCains’ marriage had begun to fray. ‘John started carousing and running around with women,’ said Robert Timberg.

McCain has acknowledged that he had girlfriends during this time, without going into details. Some friends blame his dissatisfaction with Carol, but others give some credence to her theory of a mid-life crisis.

He was also fiercely ambitious, but it was clear he would never become an admiral like his illustrious father and grandfather and his thoughts were turning to politics.

In 1979 – while still married to Carol – he met Cindy at a cocktail party in Hawaii. Over the next six months he pursued her, flying around the country to see her. Then he began to push to end his marriage.

Carol and her children were devastated. ‘It was a complete surprise,’ says Nancy Reynolds, a former Reagan aide.

‘They never displayed any difficulties between themselves. I know the Reagans were quite shocked because they loved and respected both Carol and John.’

OBAMA | Vice President Speculation & Rumors

Obama's camp got hit after it came out that Jim Johnson, one of the three folks vetting Vice Presidents for the Democratic nominee, has a "relationship with the embattled CEO of mortgage lender Countrywide Financial to his more recent oversight roles on various corporate compensation committees that approved hefty executive pay packages."

The real discussion is about who is shortlisted for the VP slot and one of the top prospects being floated around is fairly unknown:

The conversations are free-flowing but one name the vetters are inserting in the conversations is one that is not a household name... Ret. Gen. James Jones, the former Marine-turned-NATO Supreme Allied Commander.

Jones, a Vietnam vet born in Kansas City, MO (swing state alert!), was a career military officer rising to one of the highest posts possible. Now retired, Jones has been critical of the number of troops currently in Afghanistan. He's been appointed to independent posts by both the Democratic Congress and the Republican-run State Department

Jones currently is the president and CEO of the Institute for 21st Century Energy, which is an affiliate of the US Chamber of Commerce, not exactly the type of organization a typical Democrat gets involved with. Potentially problematic is that he's on Chevron's board. He also serves on the boards of Boeing and Invacare, a manufacturer and distributor of medical equipment. (Invacare’s slogan, ironically, is: “Yes, you can.”)

Being the least known potential veep, it shouldn't be surprising that the vetters have to spend more time on him in their various conversations on the Hill. But the fact that he's being, um, added to the very long short list, is an interesting development.

Besides Jones, the other names on the list bandied about with congressional Dems include (and not in any order): Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John Edwards, Evan Bayh, Kathleen Sebelius, Ted Strickland, Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Jim Webb, Bill Nelson, Jack Reed, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Tom Daschle, and Sam Nunn. You'll notice a few names NOT on this list (that's not my exclusion -- hint hint). Besides Jones, I'm told the two other names that invited extended discussion were Biden and Strickland.

McCAIN | Forum at Federal Hall in NYC

Tonight, Republican Presidential nominee Senator John McCain will be holding a town hall forum at Federal Hall (26 Wall Street) in New York City. The event is set to start at 7pm and will air live on, you guessed it, the Fox News Channel.

I have no idea how to get into this shindig, but I would suggest showing up early.

Suggested questions to ask McCain:

Does marriage for gays really do more damage to the institution of marriage than say divorcing your first wife for a richer, younger woman?

How are we winning in Iraq? What constitutes a military victory at this point? Do you not understand diplomacy?

Why do you want to give tax breaks to oil companies who have recorded record profits?

Why did you flip-flop on the Bush tax cuts?

Why do you believe that the military should be outsourced?

Why do you want to continue to cut the education budget?

And this list can obviously go on and on. Expect to see some vibrant lefties get in McCain's face at this event..........

SUPREME COURT | Rule Against Bush/McCain P.O.W. Policy

For the third straight time, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled against President Bush's detainee policies. Not that the President has actually followed any of the rulings. Seriously, how does one - especially the President of the United States - get away with ignoring three rulings from the highest court in our country?!?

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have rights under the Constitution to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts. In its third rebuke of the Bush administration's treatment of prisoners, the court ruled 5-4 that the government is violating the rights of prisoners being held indefinitely and without charges at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. The court's liberal justices were in the majority.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the court, said, "The laws and Constitution are designed to survive, and remain in force, in extraordinary times."

Kennedy said federal judges could ultimately order some detainees to be released, but that such orders would depend on security concerns and other circumstances.

It was not immediately clear whether this ruling, unlike the first two, would lead to prompt hearings for the detainees, some of whom have been held more than 6 years. Roughly 270 men remain at the island prison, classified as enemy combatants and held on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaida and the Taliban.

The ruling could resurrect many detainee lawsuits that federal judges put on hold pending the outcome of the high court case.

Another question to ask McCain at tonight's Town Hall forum, who was the co-sponsor of the the law that allowed Bush to circumvent the first two Supreme Court rulings and keep detainees illegally detained: As someone who was a P.O.W., how is it that you believe it is acceptable to keep our P.O.W.'s kept in conditions that been thrice ruled unconstitutional by our Supreme Court?

To review, the Supreme Court just ruled that Bush and McCain have acted against the best interests of America and the laws of the constitution..............

TIM RUSSERT | In Memoriam, 1950 - 2008

I've been watching Tim Russert grill politicians on Meet the Press every Sunday for as long as I can remember. The news of his death today at the age of 58 truly breaks my heart.

There are times I thought he went light on people, but for the most part, he was aces. I always loved when some politicians was trying to avoid answering one of his questios; Russert would repeat the question and if the candidate acoided it, he'd avoid it a third time so slowly that it was meant to make candidate feel stupid.

He served as chief of staff to Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan from 1977 to 1982 and counselor in New York Governor Mario Cuomo's office in Albany from 1983 to 1984. He was a brilliant, Bills loving, family locing, hard-drinking (or at least he seemed to be), political buff who died at the top of his game. Big ups to LIttle Russ.......

STEWART MOTT | In Memoriam, 1937 - 2008

A good man passed away this weekend.....

Stewart R. Mott, a philanthropist whose gifts to progressive and sometimes offbeat causes were often upstaged by his eccentricities, like cultivating a large garden atop his Manhattan penthouse, complete with 460 plant species (including 17 types of radishes) and a chicken coop, died on Thursday night.

Mr. Mott’s philanthropy went toward causes like birth control, abortion rights, sex research, arms control, feminism, civil liberties, governmental reform, gay rights and research on extrasensory perception.

His political giving, often directed against incumbent presidents, was the most visible. In 1968, he heavily bankrolled Senator Eugene J. McCarthy’s bid for president. Four years later, he was the biggest contributor to Senator George S. McGovern, the Democratic presidential nominee.

He once lived on a Chinese junk in the Hudson River as a self-described beatnik and kept notes to himself on Turkish cigarette boxes, accumulating thousands. He held folk music festivals to promote peace and love. The garden at his Manhattan penthouse (which he sold some years ago) was famous; at one point Mr. Mott taught a course in city gardening at the New School. He told an interviewer that he lay awake wondering how to grow a better radish.

His philanthropy began when he returned to Flint and started a branch of Planned Parenthood. He then traveled the nation on behalf of Planned Parenthood.

TIM RUSSERT | "Meet the Press" Tribue + Concert Promoter

This weekend, there were a lot of beautiful tributes to the late Tim Russert. Sunday's Meet The Press was hosted by a heartbroken Tom Brokaw. The panel of long-time friends like Doris Kearn Goodwins, Gwen Ifill, James Carville, Mary Matalin, Mike Barnicle and long-time Executive Producer Betsy Fischer. They all told many wonderful stories of the legendary newscaster, but a personal favorite was a story Brokaw told:

When he was at John Carroll University in Cleveland, he brought this kind of unknown but promising rock 'n' roller to campus. He was a concert promoter. The guy's name was Bruce Springsteen.

Coolness.........

POLITICAL JUNK | Obama Taps Pro-Wal-Mart Economic Policy Advisor

The brilliant Naomi Klein wrote a fascinating piece in The Nation about Democratic nominee Barack Obama and his economic policy advisors:

He has appointed 37-year-old Jason Furman to head his economic policy team. Furman is one of Wal-Mart's most prominent defenders, anointing the company a "progressive success story." On the campaign trail, Obama blasted Clinton for sitting on the Wal-Mart board and pledged, "I won't shop there." For Furman, however, it's Wal-Mart's critics who are the real threat: the "efforts to get Wal-Mart to raise its wages and benefits" are creating "collateral damage" that is "way too enormous and damaging to working people and the economy more broadly for me to sit by idly and sing 'Kum-Ba-Ya' in the interests of progressive harmony."

Furman, a leading disciple of [Golman Sachs Chief Robert] Rubin, was chosen to head the Brookings Institution's Hamilton Project, the think tank Rubin helped found to argue for reforming, rather than abandoning, the free-trade agenda.

Furman claims he will be drawing on the expertise of two Keynesian economists: Jared Bernstein of the Economic Policy Institute and James Galbraith.

I guess the good news is that Obama is looking to put together a team of DC outsiders with opposing views who won't just be a bunch of hack Yes-Men. On the other hand, why is Obama getting economic advice from a pro-Wal-Mart, anti-regulation advocate? Hmmm........

R.E.M. | Jones Beach Review + Setlist

rem_Jones_beach.jpg
After Modest Mouse's set was delayed and the cut short because of the rain, a lightning bolt struck one of the lighting towers and forced Jones Beach to ask the entire near-sold out audience to leave tbe ampitheatre for their cars or a secure area.

Somwhere around 10:30, R.E.M. finally took the stage. They played a blistering, high energy set with a whole of special selections to make sure the patient crowd got there money's worth. special little

They openedthe show with a cover of "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" then went into the tour debut of the great "So. Central Rain". Later on they dropped the great "Ignoreland," a track they once referred to as Automatic's weakest track. Then they did another tour debut with "It's tthe End of the World As We Know It". They then finished things off with Johnny Marr joining them for encores of "Fall On Me" and "Man on the Moon"

I do wish they busted out "Nightswimming," but oh well. On to Thursday's show at The Garden.....

WORLD CUP | 2010 Qualifying Round Drama Galore

This weekend there were a ton of stunning World Cup qualifying round games.

The United States scored in the first minute against Barbados and never looked back, eventually winning 8-0. Barbados's defense couldn't compete with the surprisingly strong U.S. team.

The biggest shock of the North & Central American Division Qualifiers was Trinidad & Tobago's upsetting elemination to Bermuda. Trinidad & Tobago were one of the highlights of the 2006 World Cup and easily should have beat Bermuda. Sadly, they lost 2-1 yesterday and won't advance. So, so sad.

And while Mexico ended up advancing to the round-robin round of the North & Central American Qualifiers, it took them nearly 60 minutes to score against the amateurs of Belize.

In the South America Division, they're already in a round-robin format, so none of these games resulted in eliminations (yet), but the mighty Brasil did get their asses handed to them by Paraguay in a 2-0 bout!

POLITICAL JUNK | Taliban Taking Back Afghanistan

afghan%20war.jpg
The Taliban have been on the attack for the last week.

Hundreds of Taliban fighters took over several villages in southern Afghanistan on Monday just outside the region's largest city, and NATO and Afghan forces were redeploying to meet the threat, officials said. Mohammad Farooq, the government leader in the Arghandab district of Kandahar province, said around 500 Taliban fighters moved into his district and took over several villages.

The push into Arghandab comes three days after a sophisticated Taliban attack on Kandahar's prison that freed hundreds of insurgent fighters being held there.

And more on this insane jail break:

Up to 1,000 prisoners, including 400 Taliban militants, are on the run following an audacious breakout from a jail in Afghanistan.

Fifteen security staff were reported dead after a well-planned attack on Sarposa Prison in Kandahar involving a car bomb, suicide bombers and rocket explosions.

The attack began with the blowing of the jail's entrance by a suicide bomber blowing up a lorry.

Several dozen Taliban, armed with rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles then stormed the mud-built compound and started to free the prisoners

POLITICAL JUNK | Hamas Put Gaza Under Strict Islamic Rule

Now that more than two years have passed since the one-time radical group Hamas followed President Bush's advice and went legit and swept Palestinian elections, the effects of their leadership are being felt in Gaza where residents are now living under strict Islamic rule.

Cursing God in public here — a fairly common event in this benighted and besieged strip of Palestinian land — can now lead to prison. So can kissing in public. A judge ruled last week that a bank could not collect its contracted interest on a 10-year-old loan because Islam forbids charging interest.

One year ago, gunmen from Hamas, an Islamist anti-Israel group, took over Gaza, shooting some of their more secular Fatah rivals in the knees and tossing one off a building. Israel and the West imposed a blockade, hoping to squeeze the new rulers from power. Yet today Hamas has spread its authority across all aspects of life, including the judiciary. It is fully in charge. Gazans have not, as Israel and the United States hoped, risen up against it.

Gaza has always been poor and pious, distinct from the more secular and better off West Bank. But a year of Hamas rule has made it more so. The notion of Gaza as an enduringly separate entity is solidifying, making it less likely that Palestinians might agree even among themselves on peace with Israel.

Compared with a year ago here in Gaza, more women are covered, more men are bearded, Internet sites are filtered and non-Hamas public gatherings are largely banned.

McCain, of course, will continue Bush's policy of ignoring the Israel / Palestine conflict, while Obama has made it a cornerstone of his Presidential campaign and a significant position towards repairing the damage that has increased by Bush & McCain's failed war on terror.

The Palestine / Israel conflict is the central battle of the war on terror. It was Bin Laden's first reason for attacking America and it is the main reason for so many unnecessary civilian deaths.

Obama's proactive approach to the sitution is what is needed more than ever. The world can't afford McCain and Bush's Mid East policies anymore...........

COLDPLAY | "Viva La Vida" & Pitchfork Review

Is Pitchfork giving the new coldplay a 6.5 rating the equivalant to a near perfect score from every other publication? Do you get the feeling that Pitchfork would never give a band like Coldplay anything higher than 6.5 even if they thought the album was perfect? So does this make it really a 10.0 rating?

Anyway, I've actually been enjoying Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Musically, it happens to be a really good album. Lyrically, it's a disaster. Seriously, the lyrics ar ebeyond trite. There are so many bad lines that it almost kills the entire album. Thankfully for them, the music happens to bedamn hooky and sounds really bombastic. You can make all the U2 and Radiohead comparisons, but seriously, is that such a bad thing?

In the end, this seems like the album Coldplay really wanted to make with X&Y, which was just a total mess. Viva, thanks to the music and production, sounds like a complete album that does work from start to finish. Sure it has some clunkers, but it's a fine expansion of A Rush of Blood to the Head.........

POLITICAL JUNK | Times' Op-Ed: Smoke Up Obama

I'm not sure if Tony Horwitz' "Leader of the Pack" op-ed is a joke or not, but it did make me laugh...........

AS the Democratic primaries revealed, Barack Obama is having a hard time winning the support of blue-collar voters.

So here’s a piece of strategic advice for the candidate: Lose the Nicorette. Light up instead.

Consider these statistics, culled from studies of smoking patterns. Americans who make between $24,000 and $36,000 a year smoke at twice the rate of those earning $90,000 or more. The same applies to Americans with a high-school education rather than a college degree. Rural Americans smoke more than city-dwellers. As for race, there’s a close correlation between states with high rates of white smokers and those where Mr. Obama polled worst in the primaries. Leading the pack of smoking states are Kentucky and West Virginia; industrial states like Ohio aren’t far behind.

Bottom line: small-towners in the Rust Belt and Appalachia don’t cling to guns and religion so much as they do cigarettes.

So smoking is one way Obama can win the election. Or, you know, he could just run a normal campaign against an insane old man...........

POLITICAL JUNK | McCain Goes Green By Digging For Oil

On the same day that Senator John McCain release his "Green" ad, in which he bravely asserted that he differs from other Republicans by believing that global warming exists (duh), he also announced that America should dig for oil off the cost of Florida, California and throughout Alaska.

To clarify, McCain beleives that digging for oil (something he was against just a month ago) is now necessary and will end up being good for the enviornment. He also believes that their should be a holiday from the gas tax and that oil companies should continue to get billions of dollars worth of tax breaks.

Just about everyone not associated with a conservative think tank agrees that digging for oil is a horrible idea, that a holiday from the gas tax will hurt the economy and end up costing tax payers more and that neither of those will end up reducing the cost of gas for general consumers.

And don't you love that the commercial says that the warmonger McCain stands for "peace." That's the biggest lark of them all......

POLITICAL JUNK | Marriage Legal for Gay Men & Women in California

gaymarriage.jpg
What a fabulous and historic day today is. Today is the first day that marriage is legal for gay men and women in California.

Unlike some scary Christian religious zeolots feared, the world did not completely fallen apart and society is at no more risk of being sucking into a vortex of moral corruption. Well, it actually has, but most of that could be blamed on President Bush.........

LOLLAPALOOZA | Schedule & Conflicts + After Parties

The folks at Lollapalooza have released the schedule for their three day festival.

I actally think they did a very smart thing by putting no bands up against Radiohead. The idea of having the headliners without interference is a smart idea, but I do with they would have done that on the second and third evenings. Now folks have to decide between Nine Inch Nails or Kanye West and Wilco or Rage Against the Machine.

Most conflicts seem to happen between the acts on the two main stages. I don't get why they didn't just alternate time on those stages?!?

And why does Lollapalooza close shop at 10pm? That seems damn early.

Lollapalooza also host a bunch of official afterparties at clubs around the city. Various bill include The Black Keys, Okkerrvil River, Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly, Battles, Foals, MGMT and lots more. All show and ticket information can be found after the jump.

Now, here are the big conflicts at the 2008 Lollapalooza Festival:

....Wilco vs Rage Against the Machine
....Kanye West vs Nine Inch Nails
....The Raconteurs vs Bloc Party vs Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks vs CSS vs Cadence Weapon
....Broken Social Scene vs Battles vs Lupe Fiasco
....Girl Talk vs Gnarls Barkley vs Love & Rockers
....The Toadies vs Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings
....Black Lips vs Noah & The Whale
....Flogging Molly vs Saul Williams
....Eli "Paperboy" Reed vs Iron & Wine
....Black Kids vs Chromeo
....Weakethans vs The Whigs
....Go! Team vs Yesayer vs Jeff Tweedy
....MGMT vs DeVotchKa
....The Black Keys vs Gogol Bordello
....The Kills vs Duffy
....Cat Power Vs Grizzly Bear
....The Gutter Twins vs Foals

And the winner is?

POLITICAL JUNK | The Russert Rainbow

russert_rainbow.jpg
Immediately following yesterday's memorial service to Tim Russert, this extraordinary event occurred, as Keith Olbermann reports:

"And one last note from here in Washington, even if you do not believe in omens. The memorial ended with the playing of a recording of a ukulele version of the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." And within minutes, as those of us who laughed and grieved left the kennedy Center, we were stopped in our tracks by this--a vivid double rainbow--which had spread across Washington skies while we were all in that building saying goodbye. It may be cornball. It may be easily explained by meteorological conditions of this turbulent spring in the Capital. But if there's any way that a soul was behind that, I know that was Russert. I'd recognize him anywhere."

That is a picture of the actual rainbow........

POLITICAL JUNK | Bush Holding $50 Billion of Iraq's Money In Ploy To Put Country Under U.S. Rule

Shouldn't this be the front page on every newspaper in the country?

The US is holding hostage some $50bn (£25bn) of Iraq's money in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to pressure the Iraqi government into signing an agreement seen by many Iraqis as prolonging the US occupation indefinitely, according to information leaked to The Independent.

US negotiators are using the existence of $20bn in outstanding court judgments against Iraq in the US, to pressure their Iraqi counterparts into accepting the terms of the military deal, details of which were reported for the first time in this newspaper yesterday.

The US is able to threaten Iraq with the loss of 40 per cent of its foreign exchange reserves because Iraq's independence is still limited by the legacy of UN sanctions and restrictions imposed on Iraq since Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in the 1990s. This means that Iraq is still considered a threat to international security and stability under Chapter Seven of the UN charter. The US negotiators say the price of Iraq escaping Chapter Seven is to sign up to a new "strategic alliance" with the United States.

The threat by the American side underlines the personal commitment of President George Bush to pushing the new pact through by 31 July. Although it is in reality a treaty between Iraq and the US, Mr Bush is describing it as an alliance so he does not have to submit it for approval to the US Senate.

Iraqi critics of the agreement say that it means Iraq will be a client state in which the US will keep more than 50 military bases. American forces will be able to carry out arrests of Iraqi citizens and conduct military campaigns without consultation with the Iraqi government. American soldiers and contractors will enjoy legal immunity.

This is so wrong.........

GEORGE CARLIN | In Memoriam, 1937 - 2008

George%20Carlin%20On%20The%20Road.jpg
Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, CockSucker, MotherFucker, and Tits.

George Carlin, the legendary comedian, has passed away.

Carlin was the first-ever host of NBC's Saturday Night Live, debuting on October 11, 1975. He has performed the most HBO stand-up specials, has published a couple bestselling books, appeared in numerous awesome movies (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Dogma) and was a lead voice for the children's show Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.

Of crouse, he's most famous for his groundbreaking comedy. Folks my age and younger may not recall how insane and dangerous is actually was for performers like Carlin, but if it wasn't for people like him and Lenny Bruce, we wouldn't have our precious freedom of speech.

Carlin was especially noted for his political and black humor and his observations on language, psychology, and religion along with many taboo subjects. Carlin and his "Seven Dirty Words" comedy routine were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a narrow 5-4 decision by the justices affirmed the government's right to regulate Carlin's act on the public airwaves.

Raise hell George...........

JON KRAKAUER | "The Hero"

krakauer.JPG
On October 14th, Jon Krakauer will relase his new book, "The Hero," in which he will tell the entire story of Pat Tillman.

While many people have told the story heroic and eventually tragic and shameful story hat revolves around Pat Tillman, I am sure that Krakauer will do true justice to the complete sags.

Krakauer's new book, The Hero, will be released by publisher Doubleday on October 14, 2008. The Hero will be about former NFL football player Pat Tillman, who enlisted in the US Army after 9/11 to become an Army Ranger and was eventually killed in action under suspicious circumstances in Afghanistan. In addition to performing research in Afghanistan, Krakauer was able to interview members of Tillman's family and read Tillman's diaries and letters, to prepare for writing the book. Doubleday's David Drake says Krakauer's interest in Tillman reflects "the fascination he has with extreme people, who push themselves to the very limits of their capabilities".

POLITICAL JUNK | Supreme Court Votes Against Death Penalty

In a fascinating, but highly complicated ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States voted 5-4 against the death penalty. What makes the case so complex is that this ruling pertains to sentencing someone to death for raping a child, assuming that the victim is not killed.

While not the prettiest route to getting rid of the death penalty in America for non-Federal committed crimes, it is an important step forward in banning this cruel and unusual practice.

“The death penalty is not a proportional punishment for the rape of a child,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the court. He was joined by Justices John Paul Stevens, David H. Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer.

The dissenters were Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr., generally regarded as the conservative wing of the tribunal.

JON KRAKAUER | "The Hero" Indefinitely Delayed

The other day we got excited about the new Jon Krakauer book, only to get this note sent on to us. (Thanks Jules).

Those anticipating Jon Krakauer's meditation on the nature of heroism, examined through the story of Pat Tillman, the former football star killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire, may have to wait quite a bit longer than they planned. According to Doubleday, which had The Hero scheduled for October (and planned go to press with a hefty 500,000-first-printing), Krakauer has withdrawn the title.

Krakauer is apparently unhappy with the manuscript and is holding onto it indefinitely. David Drake at Doubleday confirmed that the decision was entirely the author's and that, while the imprint is "disappointed," it supports its author. Speaking to the book's future, Drake said the situation is "a little bit wait and see" and that if the book does get rescheduled it likely wouldn't come out until at least 2009.

POLITICAL JUNK | McCain's Military Questioned By A War General, Doesn't Pay His Taxes

So America is in the middle of a recession and a major housing crisis, so now wouldn't be the best time to default on your mortgages or property taxes...unless of course you're running for the job of President of the United States of America.

Yep, it seems that John McCain has not paid taxes on one of his eight homes. I guess if you are rich enought to own EIGHT houses, you wouln't be worried with a little thing like property taxes.

San Diego County officials, it turns out, have been sending out tax notices on the La Jolla property, an oceanfront condo, for four years without receiving a response.

Didn't Wesley Snipes just get sentenced to three years in jail for not filing his taxes?

In related news, General Welsey Clake made some major headlines this weekend when he questioned how much actual military leadership McCain actually has. Americablog is on it:

It's not "nice" to ask the question, but it's actually a pretty good question. Yes, we all know that John McCain was captured and tortured in Vietnam (McCain won't let you forget). A lot of people don't know, however, that McCain made a propaganda video for the enemy while he was in captivity. Putting that bit of treason aside, what exactly is McCain's military experience that prepares him for being commander in chief? It's not like McCain rose to the level of general or something. He's a vet. We get it. But simply being a vet, as laudable as it is, doesn't really tell you much about someone's qualifications for being commander in chief. If McCain is going to play the "I was tortured" card every five minutes as a justification for electing him president, then he shouldn't throw a hissy fit any time any one asks to know more about his military experience. Getting shot down, tortured, and then doing propaganda for the enemy is not command experience. Again, it's not nice to say say, but we're not running for class president here. We deserve real answers, not emotional outbursts designed to quell the questions.

POLITICAL JUNK | How Bush Continues To Screw Up His War

One claim that Bush makes that drives me crazy is that America hasn't been attacked since 9/11. It frustrates me because our embassies have been attacked, there has been major attacks in Spain and England, our two biggest allies in Iraq, and then there is the fact that America was under attack by Anthrax!

Anyway, here's more depressing news about how much of a failure this administration has been"

Late last year, top Bush administration officials decided to take a step they had long resisted. They drafted a secret plan to authorize the Pentagon's Special Operations forces to launch missions into the snow-capped mountains of Pakistan to capture or kill top leaders of Al Qaeda.

Intelligence reports for more than a year had been streaming in about Osama bin Laden's terror network rebuilding in the Pakistani tribal areas, a problem that had been exacerbated by years of missteps in Washington and the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, sharp policy disagreements, and turf battles between American counterterrorism agencies.

The new plan, outlined in a highly classified Pentagon order, was designed to eliminate some of those battles. And it was meant to pave an easier path into the tribal areas for American commandos, who for years have bristled at what they see as Washington's risk-averse attitude toward Special Operations missions inside Pakistan. They also argue that catching Bin Laden will come only by capturing some of his senior lieutenants alive.

But more than six months later, the Special Operations forces are still waiting for the green light. The plan has been held up in Washington by the very disagreements it was meant to eliminate. A senior Defense Department official said there was "mounting frustration" in the Pentagon at the continued delay.
