In a race that really should have ended two months ago, the media has finally started saying the Democratic nominatee for President will be Senator Barack Obama.
This comes after his gigantic win in North Carolina, where Obama beat Senator Hillary Clinton by 233,497 votes. For reference, Clinton won Pennsylvania by 214,224 votes.
The networks just called Indiana for Senator Clinton, but it looks like she won't pick up any delegates and may still end up losing the popular vote after absentee ballots get counted.
Either way though, the media has finally started saying what most people have known for months: the Democratic race for President is over. Obama is the nomine.......

FINALLY!
Clinton also announced she is cancelling all her public appearances. I guess she finally is hanging it up. I can see her pulling what HW Bush did and waiting for one more win where she can formally announce her withdrawl.

This is scary, although if it was hillary it would have been just as scary. This man literally does not stand for a single principal that has driven the success of this country. Here comes the redistribution of individual choice and value!

Yeah it sure is scary to give the american people affordable healthcare, establishing a cap on green house gas emissions so we can save our homeland from disaster, spending more money on education, attempting to end the special interest domination on washington, and the start of federally funded research of alternative fuels so I'm not wasting half my pay check on gas.
Simply freightening!

Yes, it's scary, I just want to be left alone by the government. They do not know what is best for us and our families. They are not capable nor justified in redistributing my sweat and hard work. The government can not "give" anything because they don't own nor create anything, they can only take. When they begin taking, they begin limiting our lives and freedom of choice. I'm considering calling for a strike of the minds as per "Atlas Shrugged."

Government isnt there as some monolithic force and never has been. Government is a safety net and should conduct itself as such. They are there to work in our best interest so that if we ever fall into the position of needing their help they are there to provide it.
Unfortunately since Reagan Americans have forgotten that and are too worried about saving every penny of their pay check then helping that out of work factory worker, the single black mother, ect.
Ohh noes you might not be able to be buy another plasma screen tv if you have to pay taxes. And it is your right to buy that tv so go on and do so, but its also your right to be a selfish greedy dousche.
And to anyone who says its not about tvs its about rent money. Think about this. Alan Greenspan says the minimum wage should be $11.50.. instead we get $7.15. It isnt taxes thats the problem its the fact you arent getting paid what you should.
Posted on May 7, 2008 9:35 AM
adam, how do you expect to pay for those programs?
Posted on May 7, 2008 9:58 AM
By raising taxes. Ya know like what should have happened immediately after 9/11.
This is the only time in history when we have tax cuts as well as two wars and a city in ruins. We had two bridges collapse and we still have tax cuts!
We have a moron for a president and I am sad to say morons who continue to be so greedy they would rather buy a new xbox.
Go talk to your grandparents about WWII rationing.

"By raising taxes."
No way. We already pay too much. No more taxes. Free government programs just create laziness and a sense of entitlement. And btw, all the programs you want are also being touted by Clinton. But Obama is sooooo dreamy!
You want something? Work for it.
It's useless to talk about Dubya. Yes, his policies are terrible, but he is not up for election.

Adam's brand of self-righteousness is the problem that began this whole movement away from the free markets and towards the spiral of "social programs" and "entitlements." Anyone who even considers the option of raising taxes now has no understanding of simple economics, the bell curve, and the failed history and injustice of social programs. The creation and subsequent exchange of value needs to be re-nurtured by the government taking one giant step back from our lives and businesses. Those Reagan Americans or as I call them "achievers" who buy those tv's are also the ones who create this country's wealth and jobs. Where do you think the money goes after the tv is purchased? An increase in minimum wage would be a disaster for unskilled workers, the unemployment level is near perfect.

The failed history and injustice of social programs?! You mean like the new deal or great society programs that are still around to this day and benefiting millions?!
Oh man you really need to retake 20th century US history. Social programs saved capitalism.
Posted on May 7, 2008 2:16 PM
Yes, that's exactly what i mean. It's such a myth that the new deal "saved capitalism" or removed us from the depression. I can't give a history lesson through a comment box but read an unbiased account of the causes of the depression (money supply/banks) and recovery and you will no longer believe that the new deal deserves the credit. Above all, it brought about the most evil and backwards policy of this country, social security, where the individual is told how and when to save his worth by authorities at the point of a gun. Social programs have only hindered this country and the very people that they claim to help. THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT ALL-KNOWING AND WISE, TRUST IN THE INDIVIDUAL NOT IN GOVERNMENT.

Adam, I am curious, do you have a job? Did you go to college, and if so, how hard did you work at your grades?
I grew up in poverty, and I worked hard to get where I am today, just to get taxed by some arrogant limousine liberal.

Regardless of what you think of either Obama or McCain, what people need to pay attention to is that the next President will likely get two supreme court appointees.
Let's all admit that Bush didn't so much pick two Republicans as he did pro-big business men. The court needs people who care about the working class people, not the extremely wealthy.
Any sensible working class person knows that it is Democrats who protect them. Republicans end up taking more money from the American people.
A Republican in the White HOuse will only mean another 4 years of big business killing the working class.

Telex: Obviously but they also arent some monolithic force hell bent on destroying us using our own taxes. Social programs work, look at our public schools, public libraries, charity care at hospitals, ect.
I love telex: I am 24 and work for a non profit in the city. And by the way debating 101: Attempting to discredit an opponent with personal jabs, is the sign that you have lost the argument.

Working Class: Anybody who thinks we need strict constructionist judges is an idiot in my opinion. The constitution is a living document that should be interpreted to fit the times. Do you realize that the constitution doesnt even mention the word "airforce."

Adam, you're setting me up here to the point where i almost feel bad. Our public schools are a mess and are outperformed nearly across the board by private schools, charter schools and corporate education programs. Public libraries are an irrelevant factor in society due to technology and ease of access to information, and hospitals are about to take a giant turn for the worse if obama is actually elected and institutes socialized health-care. I don't discredit your intentions, but I am offended by anyone who believes that they know what is best for anyone but themselves and their family. Out lives are controlled via taxes, it is the primary benchmark of our submission to authority. I know people such as yourself demonize the dollar sign, but our freedom to exchange, save, and earn it, is source of everything that is noble about this country.
Posted on May 8, 2008 8:31 AM
Of course public schools are out performed by Private schools! The whole point of private schools is that you pay your money and they offer you the best education they can. But if every school were private the most qualified teachers materials, ect. would be stretched too thin and then you would have people paying for essentially what they are getting now in public schools... Besides if you had to pay for schools their would be no oversight of the curriculum and then things like Evolution would be dropped in places like the south.
Public Libraries arent irrelevant if you live in an impovershed area where that would be the only place to access the technology you mentioned.
As for the dollar being everything that is "noble" about this country. I thought it was our freedom of speech and to live our lives the way we see fit. You may see taxes as incringing on those rights but I dont. I see them as a safety net for those less fortunate or god forbid myself or you if we ever fall on hard times like our grand parents did during the depression.
Posted on May 8, 2008 10:59 AM
Bottom line here is you see taxes as a burden infringing on our rights, I see them as investing in this great country of ours, in our children, and in those less fortunate.
We simply subscribe to different ideologies and we both have every right to do so. I will continue to vote in my interest just as you have the right to vote in yours. Live and let live.

Perhaps a more telling benchmark on your public school system isn't that it's poor compared to private schools but that it's poor when compared to public schools in other countries (like Canada and western Europe).
As for the feeling that you guys are heavily taxed. You must be kidding. Your taxes are among the lowest in the western world.
Posted on May 8, 2008 2:29 PM
The answer to improving our public schools isnt to privatize them, its to better fund them.
