KOLLEGE DAILY | David Oppenheim, Dean of NYU Arts, Is Dead

David Oppenheim, a clarinetist at Tanglewood and a producer of classical music records and television documentaries who became the main architect of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, died in New York on Nov. 14. He was 85 and lived in Manhattan.

Mr. Oppenheim was dean of the N.Y.U. School of the Arts from 1969 to 1991, and in 1985 he secured a donation of $7.5 million from Laurence A. Tisch and his brother, Preston Robert Tisch, billionaire businessmen who were then members of the N.Y.U. board of trustees. With that donation, most of the school’s programs were centralized in a 12-story building at 721 Broadway as the Tisch School of the Arts. (via New York Times).......

POLITICAL JUNK | Obama & Huckabee Lead in Iowa

With the first primary election happening next month in Iowa, Senator Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee have broken away from the pack to take an almost comfortable lead from the long standing front runners, Senator Hillary Clinton and Governor Mitt Romney.

Of course, Iowa doesn't hold primary elections, but rather they do caucuses, a ridiculous system in which the field of candidates continues to get narrowed down and people can constantly switch who they're alligning themselves with until one candidate can swing a majority. It really is a retarded system.........

POLITICAL JUNK | Texas Education Official Refuses To Endorse "Intelligent Design," Loses Job

Someone really needs to seriously mess with Texas and quick:

The state's director of science curriculum said she resigned this month under pressure from officials who felt she gave the appearance of criticizing the instruction of intelligent design.

Next year, the State Board of Education begins a review of the state science curriculum, which will set standards for classroom instruction and textbook selection.

Idiocracy isn't that far from reality........

COLBERT REPORT | Tonight, Live at the UCB Theatre

"The Colbert Report" is following the recent "ON STRIKE" live performances of "30 Rock" and "Saturday Night Live" with a show tonight at the UCB Theatre. Advance tickets sold out before I noticed it and stand-by will likely be impossible. Damn it.

Other shows I'd like to see performed live at the UCB Theatre include "The Office," "The Daily Show with John Stewart" and a live reading of "The Simpson"........

GIBSON | Self-Tuning Guitars Are Here

The guitar roadie lobby must be up in arms.

Robotics technology developed by German company Tronical Gmbh in partnership with Gibson Guitar Corp. enables Gibson's newest Les Paul model to tune itself in about two seconds.

The Gibson Les Paul guitar model with Blue Silverburst finish goes on sale globally this Friday.

Musician Ichiro Tanaka, who tuned and played a sample guitar at Gibson's Tokyo office Monday, said the technology is handy for professionals too. If they use special tuning for just part of a concert, as he often does, it means they don't have to lug around an extra guitar with the second tuning ready.

The Les Paul Silverburst model is to cost about $2,780 in Japan and $2,499 in the U.S., with self-tuning offered for $900 extra.

Powertune is also listed online for about $800, and Tronical says it can be installed on many different models of electric guitars without leaving a mark.

Gibson guitars with the technology come preset with six types of tuning to play different kinds of music. They also can remember a player's additional original tuning styles, by listening with a microphone to the sounds of the strings.

To set the instrument to a particular tuning, the user pulls a knob, turns it to the desired style, indicated with a blue light, and then pushes the knob back in. An electric signal travels up the strings to the motors on the tuning pegs. The system is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

How long until this is standard on guitars.........

HAPPY (C)HANUK(K)AH | Yo La Tengo, Not Christmas

It's the first night of Hanukah/chanukah/chanukkah! Light the menorah and get yourself to New Jersey to see Yo La Tengo play the first of eight special shows at Maxwells in Hoboken. The only known opening act for any of the shows so far is Versus, who will be one of supposedly two opening acts on December 5th.

Acts that are rumored (including some that seem completely unlikely) to be opening for Yo La Tengo include David Cross, Cat Power, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Bon Iver, Elvis Perkins, Sean Lennon, Red Kross, Thurston Moore, The Clean......

SANTACON | This Saturday in NYC, Chuck Palahniuk, and a Very Special XMAS Mix

The best thing about Christmas is Santacon. This year, the annual gathering of a couple thousand drunk folks dresses as Saint Nick happens on Saturday, December 8th. The meet up will happen at 9:30am and the spot will be announced on the Santacon site, so check it on Friday (they announce it last minute because they don't get permits or anything).

On Saturday, Santacon will also be taking over Austin, Asheville, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Munich, Phoenix, Portland, Sacremento and Washington DC.

In 2003, I sent Chuck Palahniuk on a book tour. At a stop in Portland, he was attacked by a gigantic group of Santaconners who forced the author to do shots with him and get dressed like Santa. Photos are here........

WALK HARD | Dewey Cox Gets High, Touring (NYC, LA, etc)

Walk Hard's trailer hasn't really made me want to see the movie, but the two clips in this post did make me laugh. The first is a spoof of Ray and the second is from Walk the Line. Also, John C. Reilly is going on tour as Dewey Cox. The tour will be hitting New York City. Dates and ticket info tk........

John C. Reilly doesn't just act the part. He is the part.

The Oscar-nominated actor will tour for the next couple of weeks in the guise of his upcoming screen persona, the titular rock icon in the mock biopic Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Reilly-as-Cox and his band, the Hard Walkers, will kick off their seven-date engagement on Wednesday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, before moving on to Chicago, Austin, Nashville, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York—all major music cities.

Tickets will be available to members of the Dewey Cox Fan Club and through local radio station promotions, meaning it might take a little luck to be able to hear songs from the classic albums Free Love Christmas and Strawberry Fox Glove before Walk Hard hits theaters Dec. 21.

BANKSY | NYC Show Is A Fake + Cease & Desist

The folks at Complex tipped us off that the Banksy exhibit we told you about the other day is actually an unauthorized exhibit of the graffiti artists work and nowhere near as brilliant as his usual shows.

That sucks. I was totally stocked that Banksy was finally coming back to New York City. He's only done one other official show in NYC and that was back in 2003.

Complex also sent us links to their cease & desist that they've gotten for posting "actual" pictures of the artist known as Banksy......

VIACOM | Employees Losing Benifits, Getting More Hours

The company behind MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon, amongst other networks, has decided to take full advantage of their "permalance" workers, a group that makes up over 40% of the people who work for Viacom. These full time employees have been always worked 40+ hour work weeks and been given a standard benifit packages (health, dental, eye) and tuition reimbursement.

That is until they're forced to sign new paperwork that will make all of their 1099 full-time freelancers lose their travel-tax cut, dental benefits and paid vacation time. According to Gawker:

Here's how they were planning on telling people: Viacom sends out Christmas party invites to staff, but permalancers have to go pick them up. (Nice caste system.) So when permalancers went to pick up the invites, they were told "go across the table to pick up your new paperwork."

Here's what we hear from what we believe has truly become the Viacom sweatshop. (One Viacom permalancer estimates that almost 50% of the staff are contract workers at this point.) A 50-hour workweek will now be standard, at least at MTV Digital (which means no overtime until after 50 hours, and no overtime at all for higher-level people, like producers and segment producers), and all will go from a day rate to an hourly rate. Healthcare, which was offered to permalancers after a staggering year of service, will now be offered only to employees who have worked 1,280 hours (25 of those 50-hour workweeks) in any one division. And that's the catch: Get transfered, as often happens, from VH1 to MTV or the like, and you start over on that clock.

Even under threat of being illegally fired, a group of permalancers have been passing around a petition addressed to Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman. In it, they threaten to go to the IRS over the recent elimination of their benefits. The deadline for Viacom's serfs to sign paperwork for the new system is Friday.

Tomorrow is the MTVN holiday party at the Hammerstein Ballroom—a party that usually costs the company over a million dollars.........

FAUX PUNK | Win Tickets to Daft Punk "Alive 2007" Release Party

fauxpunk_r1.jpg
"Previously available only for download, Daft Punk's Alive 2007 is an accomplishment in sound engineering, ambitious enough to make the geekiest of audiophiles pee their pants. For those less technologically inclined, the crystal-clear concert, recorded in Paris' Bercy arena, is a collection of classics, recombined with the robotic duo's trademark ingenuity. Sadly, the Parisian natives can't make it to Greenpoint tonight to fête the stateside release in person, but they've sent their best cronies — a group of cover DJs appropriately dubbed Faux Punk. David Bruno of the Slap You in Public NYC music blog also mans the decks." via Flavorpill

We're randomly giving away two sets of tickets to Daft Punk's Alive 2007 Official Record Release Party at Studio B in Brooklyn, New York. To enter, email productshopnyc @ gmail.com with the subject "FAUX PUNK." Advance tickets to the Friday, December 7th, shindig at Studio B are surprisingly still on sale.........

MOTHERF**KERNYC | 2000 - 2007, In Memoriam

I can barely remember going to any of the early Motherfucker parties, but there is photographic evidence that I was in attedence. They were great fun and the fact that they last for over seven years in a city where the average party can't sustain for more than two years is pretty amazing. Here's the official word on the Motherfucker funeral (via The Music Slut):

Dear Motherf**kers,

I regret to announce the end to another era in clubland. Motherfucker, is no more. For the last year or so, relations between the 4 partners has been strained and finally it reached it's inevitable breaking point. We did not anticipate our exit to be so abrupt but alas, life throws curve balls at all of us when least expected. I don't know if there will ever be another MF. Perhaps... will all the stars be that aligned again... doubtful.

POLITICAL JUNK | Halliburton/U.S. Government Cover Up Rape of U.S. Woman in Iraq

Just last week, President Bush and the American media condemned Saudi Arabia for the way they handled a woman being raped - the victim was lashed and put in prison. Then you see this news story and feel ashamed to be an American:

A Houston, Texas woman says she was gang-raped by Halliburton/KBR coworkers in Baghdad, and the company and the U.S. government are covering up the incident.

Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR, Jones says she was held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by KBR, which posted armed security guards outside her door, who would not let her leave.

Finally, Jones says, she convinced a sympathetic guard to loan her a cell phone so she could call her father in Texas.

"I said, 'Dad, I've been raped. I don't know what to do. I'm in this container, and I'm not able to leave,'" she said. Her father called their congressman, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas.

"We contacted the State Department first," Poe told ABCNews.com, "and told them of the urgency of rescuing an American citizen" -- from her American employer.

Poe says his office contacted the State Department, which quickly dispatched agents from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to Jones' camp, where they rescued her from the container.

According to her lawsuit, Jones was raped by "several attackers who first drugged her, then repeatedly raped and injured her, both physically and emotionally."

Jones told ABCNews.com that an examination by Army doctors showed she had been raped "both vaginally and anally," but that the rape kit disappeared after it was handed over to KBR security officers.

Over two years later, the Justice Department has brought no criminal charges in the matter. In fact, ABC News could not confirm any federal agency was investigating the case.

Legal experts say Jones' alleged assailants will likely never face a judge and jury, due to an enormous loophole that has effectively left contractors in Iraq beyond the reach of United States law.

YEAR END LSITS | The 30 Most Disappointing Albums of 2007

2007_ALBUMS_OF_THE_YEAR.JPG
This year was an excellent year for music. We loved so many freaking albums that our Best of list is going to be super-sized (we'll post that list tomorrow). While this year provided us with plenty of stellar albums, we also had quite a few of clunkers. The below list of albums that disappointed us, which doesn't necessarily mean that they suck, it just means that we weren't very into them, barely listened to them, or gave it away after a couple of unenthusiastic spins. Most interesting thing about Marilyn Manson these days: Evan Rachel Wood.

IKE TURNER | 1931 - 2007, In Memoriam

ike.jpg
Why is it that all the original rock n' rollers were so fucked up? Chuck Berry had a thing for secretly taking pictures of women while they were using the bathroom. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year-old first cousin. And Ike Turner beat his wife (amongst others).

While I personally think Ike is a total piece of shit, his contribution to music can not be overlooked. As the songwriter behind Sun Records's "Rocket 88" by , he more-or-less invented rock n' roll. As a talent scout for Sun, he discovered and signed Howlin' Wolf and Elmore James.

While that alone could have made Ike a musical legend, it was his discovery of Anna Mae Bullock that changed the musical world. He fell so hard for Anna Mae that he not only made her his musical partner, but also his wife. It was Ike and Tina Turner. Non-stop hits. Influencing everyone from the Rolling Stones to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Brilliant. Magic. Originals.

Of course, then the story spins out of control. Abuse and Drugs. Guns and jail. In 2005, Damon Albon asked Ike to appear on Gorillaz' second album, Demon Days, playing piano on the track, "Every Planet We Reach Is Dead". He would perform the song live with the band in Manchester and New York's Apollo Theatre.

The last thing that Ike ever put on record was a colloboration with The Black Keys and producer Danger Mouse. That project was shelved, but many demos are said to still exist.

Ike Turner. Dead at the age of 76..........

POLITICAL JUNK | Health for minors (nay) & Viacom employees (yay)

President Bush has vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have provided healthcare to some six million uninsured minors.

"This bill does not put poor children first, and it moves our country's health care system in the wrong direction," Bush's statement said. "Ultimately, our nation's goal should be to move children who have no health insurance to private coverage, not to move children who already have private health insurance to government coverage."

Merry Fucking Christmas. Now get a job you lazy, unemployeed seven year-old. Oh speaking of healthcare, on the same day that Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone cashed in $23.6 million worth of stock, over 40% of the companies workforce walked out after they were threatened with losing healthcare benefits!

The results of the walkout and mass media coverage? Viacom has reinstalled healthcare beneftis for their full-time freelancers.

Glad to see that Viacom did the right thing. Now, if only our President wasn't such a douchebag.......

JACKASS | Digital Only Movie Coming December 19th

It's kind of like "Ow! My Balls!" from Idiocracy......

For the sequel "Jackass 2.5," the dirty daredevils pull a new stunt: bypassing the movie theater entirely.

"Jackass 2.5" will instead be released to the Internet. The feature — which combines unreleased footage from "Jackass Number Two" and new content — was announced Thursday as a joint venture between Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures and MTV Networks.

"It's the first broadband movie ever distributed by a major studio," said Thomas Lesinski, President of Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment.

Blockbuster Inc. will present "Jackass 2.5" free of charge at http://www.blockbuster.jackassworld.com beginning Dec. 19 through Dec. 31; on Dec. 26, DVDs of the film will be available for purchase on the site and at major retailers, as well as for rent at Blockbuster stores and the company's Web site. The film will also be available for download at iTunes, Amazon.com and other sites — at a price.

You can watch "Ow! My Balls!" after the jump.......

GOLDEN GLOBES | Nominees Announced, Clint Eastwood vs Eddie Vedder

The nominees have been announced for next year's Golden Globe awards.

Cate Blanchett nabbed two nominations, Best Actress Drama for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Best Supporting Actress Comedy or Musical for I'm Not There.

Juno and Sweeney Todd got nominated for Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, but so did the awful Hairspray and the even worse Across the Universe. How the hell did those last two flicks make the cut? Come on, Knocked Up easily was a better film.

John C. Reilly also got a nod for his portrail of Dewey Cox in Walk Hard!?!

For Original Song and score, it's Shakira (Love in the Time of Cholera) vs Eddie Vedder (Into The Wild) vs Judd Apatow (Walk Hard) vs Clint Eastwood (Grace Is Gone). Yep, that Clinton Eastwood did all the music for the John Cusack widow flick.

All nominees are after the jump................

RIAA | Ripping Albums Onto Your Computer Is "Unauthorized"

Those Krazy Kooks at the RIAA now say that ripping a CD that you bought onto your computer is illegal. So if you purchased music and put it on your computer so you can listen to the album on your iPod or Zune, you're breaking the law?!

Next time you want to import a CD onto your computer, think twice. According to a recent supplementary document filed by the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) in support of its motion for summary judgment in the case Atlantic vs. Howell—where a couple is being sued for sharing songs over Kazaa—converting sound recordings from a legally bought record into an MP3 format is considered "unauthorized."

Eventually, the RIAA will claim that playing a record for your friend is illegal without written consent from the label and artist........

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN | 3 Shows at Giants Stadium + The Hold Steady on E Street Radio

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's hit Giants Stadium on July 27th, July 28th, and July 31st. Tickets go on sale December 15th at noon. That really doesn't compare to the 10 shows he sold out at the 78,000 capacity venue a few years back, but I'd expect the Boss to announce more dates once these sell out.

Bruce also plays Long Island's intimate-compared-to-Giants-Stadium Nassau Coliseum on March 10th, for which tickets go on sale until Januar 19th. Full tour dates after the jump.

On a related note, our friends in The Hold Steady recently made an awesome appearance guest hosting a two hour show on Sirius' E Street Radio channel, which is indeed a station that plays 24 hours a day of Springsteen music. It should replay this weekend. It's awesome.......

NEIL YOUNG | United Palace, Setlists + Jonathan Demme

With tickets costing as much as $186, Neil Young fan(atic)s have been expected his six shows at the United Palace Theatre to be exceptional. Well, musically they are, but the mood of the evening haven't been helped by signs and announcements telling the crowd how to behave during the show, when they're allowed to drink beers and police investigations.

Also very surprising is that Neil has been performing virtually the same setlist every night! So I hope you haven't bought tickets to more than one night.

Also, Jonathan Demme filmed the two Philly shows for a future film.......

YEAR END LISTS | PSNYC's 111 Best Albums of 2007

2007_ALBUMS_OF_THE_YEAR.JPG
It's a shame that the major labels still have their heads stuck up their corporate anti-online assholes, because this was an absolutely fantastic year for music! I can seriously fill my portable music device with only albums that came out this year and be totally happy. There were so many good-to-great records this year that I had to make my list super-duper long this year.

I can honestly say that every album between ten and thirty-five could/should easily have been in my top ten. In the end though, I tried my hardest to break it down as honestly as I could. This my personal taste and my own opinions. In another week, I'll probably want to completely redo this list, but I'm fairly certain that my top ten will stay my top ten.

Anyway, without hyping this anymore, here is Product Shop NYC's 111 Best Albums of 2007 list. And seriously, go see all the bands when they tour. Support touring acts. Support indie records. Support true artists..............
