THE RAPTURE + B-52'S | Halloween at Roseland, Ghostbusters

P1110339
The B-52's and The Rapture played a super high energy show to a super high energy crowd at the Roseland Ballroom. Those B-52 fans are nearly as weird and obsessive as Ween fans.

In the past, The Rapture have dressed as spacemen and as skeletons. This year they went as ghostbusters! Pretty awesome....... (photos by Ballulah)

THE POLICE | Halloween at Madison Sq Garden

HALLOWEEN_POLICE.jpg
The Police brought their reunion tour back to Madison Square Garden for halloween. The entire band dressed up: Sting as a joker, Andy as a Charlie Chaplin, and Stewart as some space snake or something. It would have been nice if they changed their setlist around for this show, but they didn't. Same setlist as every other night on the tour.......

BLACKWATER | Guarding FBI Agents Probing Blackwater, Immunity Deal

In the midst of gigantic investigation into Blackwater's ruthless tactics in Iraq, Secretary of State secretly tried to broker an immunity deal with the hired-soldiers whom are under investigation for the September 16th murder of 17 unarmed Iraqi. The deal fell apart when talk of the deal hit national newspapers.

In related news, Blackwater has been hired by the State Department to guard an FBI team assigned to probing the Blackwater September 16th shooting spree that left at least 17 Iraqi civilians dead.......

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE | Brian Williams Hosts, Obama

Brian Williams is pretty fantastic. The opening skit, which included a "surprise" appearance from Senator Obama, was pretty funny. You got to love that Bill was dressed as the Pick-Up Artist.

Here's one more skit with Brian...........

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE + CHUCK BERRY + ETTA JAMES + JERRY LEE LEWIS | Live at B.B. Kings in NYC

B.B. King's in New York City is where all the oldies and nostalgia acts seem to play, and if you dig through the tons of crap cover bands they book, you'll find some amazing acts, including some major legends whom are worth checking out.

B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Etta James, and Chuck Berry all still put on pretty stellar shows. Etta James especially. As for Sly & The Family Stone, well, this is going to be their first concert in something like thirty years. They did perform at the 2006 Grammys and man did they bomb. Here's hoping Sly is in better shape for these gigs.........

PRINCE | Suing & Demanding Money From Top Three Fan Sites

Prince sent his lawyers after the three largest Prince fansites, whom have joined together to start a new site, Prince Fans United, where they are taking their frustration with the Purple One public. Here's the press release they just released

November 5, 2007 PRINCE FANS FIGHT BACK AGAINST ATTACKS

In an extraordinary, but not unfamiliar move, the rock legend Prince is using an army of lawyers to launch attacks on his own fans.

Several of the largest web communities dedicated to the artist have received notices to cease and desist all use of photographs, images, lyrics, album covers and anything linked to Prince’s likeness.

It is our opinion that these threats are not made in an attempt to enforce valid copyright as Prince alleges in his threats, rather we believe they are attempts to stifle all critical commentary about Prince. We strongly believe that such actions are in violation of the freedom of speech and should not be allowed. Prince claims that fansites are not allowed to present any artwork with Prince’s likeness, to the extreme that he has demanded removal of fan’s own photographs of their Prince inspired tattoos and their vehicles displaying Prince inspired license plates.

Prince’s representatives have requested that the fansites provide them with “substantive details of the means by which you [the fansites] propose to compensate our clients [Paisley Park Enterprises, NPG Records and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG)] for damages…”

The owners of the three largest fansites supporting Prince: www.housequake.com, www.princefams.com and www.prince.org have come together to fight back to what amounts to an injustice to the fansites and the very fans who have supported Prince’s career, many since the very beginning nearly thirty years ago.

It is their hope that Prince will reconsider his position and allow these fansites to continue their existence without constant threats from Prince and his attorneys. Should this not be possible, the fansites are fully prepared to defend their position in the proper court of law, as well as fully prosecute any claims to which they are justly entitled.

The owners of housequake.com, princefams.com and prince.org acknowledge that, while Prince is entitled to control of his copyrights, it should be within the law. The law clearly provides for displaying of images of a celebrity’s likeness for newsworthy events or matters that are considered to be public interest. All three websites feel that the photographs and/or likeness displayed on their websites clearly fall within the public interest category. Additionally, the use of photographs is legal based on the fair use doctrine, i.e. the displaying of album cover art, or the collage headers created by website members using a variety of different photographs.

For princefams.com: Endre Adolfsen and Jonathan Nice
For prince.org: Ben Margolin

chris_gaines_greatesthits.jpg
It didn't make big headlines, but Elvis Presley has been dethroned as the top selling solo artist in America by Garth Brooks! The geeky country legend has sold 123 million records compared to Elvis' 118.5 million.

The Beatles still retain the crown of most albums sold with 170 million. The full list of top selling artists and records sold after the jump...........

POLITICAL JUNK | Giuliani Gets Christian Conservative Vote, New Yorkers Still Don't Trust Him

Another reason NOT to vote for Giuliani. Pat Robertson has endorsed the twice divorced Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani. And as always, let's remember that his first marriage was to his first cousin.

Also, a NY1/Time Warner poll showed that New York City residents would feel safer with Hillary Clinton in the Oval Office than the Mayor of 9/11..

POLITICAL JUNK | Oil at $98 A Barrel

Failed oil-tycoon and current U.S. President George W. Bush must be thrilled by the news that oil is about to hit $100 a barrel. Meanwhile, everyone else in America should be freaking the fuck out about this.

The higher the price of oil, the more expensive everything becomes, from traveling by planes or car to the price of the concert ticket. Yep, it has an immediate effect on everything......

AMY WINEHOUSE | House Raided, Falling Apart Even More

THE BLOOD BROTHERS | 1997-2007, In Memoriam

The Blood Brothers have split..........

Dear Friends,

After 10 years of making music as The Blood Brothers, we have made the collective decision that our time together has come to an end. We feel extremely fortunate to have spent such a deeply memorable and amazing part of our lives with each other. At this point, however, we feel it's best that our futures move forward on separate paths. We'd like to express our sincerest thanks and gratitude to all the bands we've played with, individuals who have helped us make our records, and fans who have come to our shows and picked up our music throughout the years. Your friendship, support and love hold such a profoundly special place in each of our hearts. We hope that the memories you attach to our music are as fond as those you have given us. Thank you and take care, we'll miss all of you.

Love,
The Blood Brothers

MY BLOODY VALENTINE | Kevin Talks New Album, Box Set, Reunion

While making a rare interview appearance on "Soft Focus," a vbs.tv interview program hosted by the Sassyist boy in America, Ian Svenonius, Kevin Sheilds confirmed that a My Bloody Valentine reunion is happening. Watch the interview here.

He said a similiar thing a couple of years ago regarding a box set and a new studio album.

Last year, a major offer was made to the band to perform at Coachella, which was at first accepted then passed on for various reasons. Let the 2008 Coachella / Lollapalooza / Glastonbury / Reading / Bonnaroo rumors begin.

Expect the new My Bloody Valentine record to come out the same day as Chinese Democracy.......

RADIOHEAD | Testcast Last Night, Cover Bjork, Webcast Tonight

Radiohead will be doing a webcast tonight. Last night they did a seventeen minute testcast in which they covered Bjork's "Unravel"

COACHELLA | Festival Dates Announced

The 2008 Coachella Music and Arts Festival will once again be a three-day event. The promoters announced that it will be held April 25th - 27th.

Big rumors this year include R.E.M., My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead, White Stripes and a reunion from The Screaming Trees..........

POLITICAL JUNK | Kucinch & Republican Congress Try to Impeach Cheney, Blocked By Democrats?!?

What kind of ass-backwards country do we live? Representative Dennis J. Kucinich, Democrat of Ohio, brought a bill to the House floor to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney on the grounds that he lied to congress and the American public about the reason's for going to war in Iraq.

This is exactly what Democrats said to win the elections in 2006 and it's what all the Democrats are saying in hopes of winning elections in 2008.

So why did Republican's vote for impeachment hearings (answer: they think it would embarass Democrats) and Democrats vote against (answer: they think it will make them look petty even though over 60% of American's are in favor of Cheney and Bush being removed from office)?

I hate Democrats. All fucking talk. No action...........

RADIOHEAD | Webcast Now, Unbelievable!

Holy Shit. The Radiohead webcast is going on at www.radiohead.tv. They just played a cover of New Order's "Ceremony" and it sounded amazing. I'm sure it will be heavily bootlegged starting tomorrow morning.......

THE BABYSHAMBLES | Shotter's Nation, Crack Is Whack

Here's the thing about Pete Doherty that upsets me. He's such a fucking waster, but he can still turn out a brilliant song. I've been listening to Shotter's Nation and its got some really top material. Not Libertine quality, but damn better than Dirty Pretty Things or Down in Albion.

And on a related note: Here's a look at Pete's potential future. It's totally NSFW, but one of the most insane blog entries I've ever read. Crack is indeed very, very whack. (Via the thighmaster)..........

Jay Z played the Hammerstein Ballroom and Apollo Theatre to promote his American Gangster joint. The shows included tons of guests, including Diddy and Lil' Wayne.

You also may have noticed that American Gangster isn't available on iTunes. That's cause Jay-Z is not allowing the disc to be sold on iTunes, because they refuse to sell album's as a whole and this is supposed to be a concept album.

Hova also made a great guest on a recent Charlie Rose Show. That video is after the jump.......

BEAT RADIO | Mercury Lounge + "When It Comes On Like A Dream" Free LP Download + Cover The Diggs

Beat Radio are playing the Mercury Lounge on Wednesday, November 14, at 8:30pm. If you haven't caught them live yet, you really should.

Also, a majority of Beat Radio was involved in a side-project that sounds nothing like Beat Radio. Here's what they say:

when it comes on like a dream is a record phil and i made in the fall of 2003. it was a crazy time, my first son jackson had just been born and the original lineup of beat radio had broken up and tim and rob were starting the diggs. it was just phil and i with jim on drums. vanesa sang on a couple of songs also. we sort of made it in a vacuum over the course of a couple months. at the time it felt like the kind of record i had wanted to make for a long time, sort of emotional, lyrically driven acoustic music. we've always loved the record but no one's ever really heard it.

we've decided to put it out as a free digital download at beatradio.org. it's pretty different from beat radio but i'm hoping it will find some sort of audience and life of it's own. i'd love to hear what you think of it. if you like it please pass it along.

You can download when it comes on like a dream here for free. You can also download Beat Radio's debut album, The Great Big Sea, for free here.......

MINISTRY | Final Tour, Fillmore NY, Presale Thursday

Ministry are calling it quits...or at least Al Jourgensen is putting his main musical outlet on hold until they can come back as the monsters of industrial rock that they should be hailed as. They'll end up being one of those band's that reunites for Coachella in seven years and will get major props. Anyway, here's what the band says:

On the heels of their final studio release, "The Last Sucker," released September 18, 2007, Ministry announces their final world tour, "C U LaTouR," with Special Guests Meshuggah and opening act Hemlock. Ministry kicks off the North American leg of "C U LaTouR" in Vancouver on March 28, 2008, stopping in a limited engagement 33 major market cities through mid-May, ending the U.S. leg in Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen's home town of Chicago.

The tour hits The Fillmore in New York City on May 1st and 2nd. A presale starts on Thursday, November 15th. All tour dates after the jump........

WHITE STRIPES | "Conquest" Single + Collab w/ Beck on B-Sides + Matador Trading Cards

matador.jpgI guess Meg has recovered from her "acute anxiety"......

The White Stripes have been busy making a video for "Conquest", their third single. Directed by prolific music videographer Diane Martel.....the video follows an explosive - if unconventional - love story that pits man against bull in the ultimate conquest. To make his performance as authentic as possible, Jack White trained extensively with famed bullfighter Dennis Borba. The video will premiere on MTV on November 26th and will be available on iTunes from November 27th.

"Conquest" will also be released as a single; stunningly packaged and featuring three exclusive new tracks across three 7" vinyl formats - one black, one white and one red colored vinyl. Jack and Meg recently recorded the new tracks with Beck, who co-produced all three tracks during a recording session in his living room and also contributed vocals and piano to "It's My Fault For Being Famous" and slide guitar on "Honey, We Can't Afford To Look This Cheap".

Inspired by the "Conquest" video, each single will also include a Mondo Toro trading card featuring the legendary, near-mythical matadors El Sloth, El Bianca Rosa and El Perdador. Despite being from early 1900's Spain and Portugal, these bullfighters look strangely familiar. US copies of these singles will also include a different poster with each release.

NO AGE | The New Yorker Profile, Sign To Sub Pop

Sasha Frere-Jones has been reading the blogs lately. His last New Yorker article was on Animal Collective and this week he profiles No Age! Here's what he says:

This enthusiasm is impressive, given that No Age’s music is not instantly inviting. Listening to the album is a bit like entering a cave; it takes a few moments to acclimate your senses to No Age’s methods. The band has no bass player, and Randall’s guitar often sounds hazy and thick, with echoey effects. He tends to process his notes electronically, using pedals to inflate chords into sheets of glimmering noise that evoke the overwhelmingly distorted sound of bands like My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain. Spunt’s drumming and delivery is blunt, reminiscent of L.A. punk rock from the eighties, which scorned pretension.

The band recently signed to Sub Pop, the independent Seattle label that released Nirvana’s early records; its current groups include the Shins and the Postal Service, both of which sometimes outsell major-label acts.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE | Announce First Live Dates

The problems with the Jesus & Mary Chain and Dinosaur Jr reunions have been that the bands are nowhere near as loud or noisy as they once were. MBV were always the loudest and noisiest. I hope they don't go lite on us when they make their live return this summer:

My Bloody Valentine have announced details of their first live dates since 1992.

The band, who have not released an album since 1991's 'Loveless', will play three shows in summer 2008.

They will play:
London Roundhouse (June 20)
Manchester Apollo (28)
Glasgow Barrowland (July 2)

Tickets go on sale this Friday (November 16).

TAPES 'N TAPES | Album Number Two Completed

Tapes 'N Tapes have finished record number two. Here's what they say:

so we’ve finished recording our next record. we spent about 3 weeks out in upstate new york recording and mixing with dave fridmann. it was a lot of fun. i’m really excited about how it’s all turned out. we haven’t settled on a tracklist or album title yet, but that will all come in due time. that was the big news that i wouldn’t talk about in the last post. i just didn’t want to jinx anything by talking about it before we were done with it. but now that it’s done, i’m pumped! so that’s it…that’s the big news. i’m sure i’ll have more details about the record in the next few months. i’ll be sure to share when i do. til then, it’s back to life as normal.

They'll debut a bunch of the new songs when they play a FREE show in minneapolis at the triple rock on November 30th...........

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE | Forcibly Removed From Rehab

Funny or obnoxious:

Queens Of The Stone Age were forcibly removed from a California rehab facility last week just after the beginning of their set. The band opened the show with their song "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer" which contains the lyrics "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol... c-c-c-c-c-cocaine."

The band was set to perform a six-song show for in-patients at an unnamed Los Angeles clinic, but it all came to an abrupt and chaotic end when the band were cut off before the end of the first song and manhandled out of the building by heavy security.

NOAH & THE WHALE | "Five Years Time" + "Jocasta"

I've just gotten turned on to Noah & The Whale, a London folk outfit, and I'm totally addicted to "Five Years Time" and "Jocasta." They may very well be my new favorite band.

They're part of the same scene that gave us Kate Nash and Emmy the Great. They also remind me of The Smiths - not that they sounds anything like The Smiths - in the sense that their music seems sad, but has the ability to make me feel joyful. I also love their Wes Anderson inspired video.......

SPIRITUALIZED | Acoustic Mainline at the Apollo Theater

spiritualized.jpg
The Apollo was the perfect setting for Jason Pierce's Acoustic Mainline performance. This New York City show was only around his 10th time performing on acoustic guitar with only an organ player, a string quartet and a five-person choir.

Simple Kid opened with a short set that saw him play along to a video of Kermit the Frog and his Logic Express backing band. He was decent, but didn't leave much of an impression.

When the Spaceman took the Apollo stage at around 9:30pm, he launching into a dazzling version of "Sitting On Fire." By the time he got to the third song, an amazing cover of Daniel Johnston's often covered "True Love Will Find You In The End," I felt like I was watching something very special....but then something odd happened....the crowd went all disrespectful.

Inside this beautiful theater, while almost everyone sat quietly, taking in this righteous music, numerous people kept getting up from their seats in the middle of songs. Others started talking on their cellphones, while patrons at the bar were talking loudly and making jokes about how "every song sounded the same," which couldn't have been further from the truth.

One particularly loud douchebag kept screaming out request and demanding that J. "take his sunnies off." It was beyond rude and disrupted the spiritual nature of the evening.

Regardless of some naughty crowd members, the music really was fantastic. The girl sitting next to us starting bawling during, ironically, "Stop Your Crying" and didn't stop until the show was over. I must admit that "Stop Your Crying" had me in tears as well.

The "Anything More" into "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" into Elvis' "Can't Help Falling In Love" medley was breathtaking and brought about the first standing ovation of the evening. It was the highlight of the show.

A bluesy take on the mournful "Broken Heart" led into "I Think I'm In Love...," which was, in my opinion, the only song that suffered from this minimalist approach.

An amazing show that easily could have been a contender for show of the year had it not been for some very disrespectful audience members. Seriously, why don't those people just leave the venue? Fuckers. (photo by paulgalipeau).......

KANYE WEST | Breaks Down At Paris Comeback Gig

Kanye West played his first concert since his mother passed away. You may recall that that story broke to newspaper's on Veteran's Day (Number of stories on Veteran's Day in the Daily News and New York Post about Kanye and/or his mother: 3. Number of stories about the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: 0).

Anyway, Kanye played his first show since his mother's unfortunate death in Paris. About halway through the show, it's reported that:

"He said the word, 'Mother' and just couldn't go any further. A back-up singer, the DJ and a guitar player came over to console him. It looked like he might collapse. He just couldn't continue. He just stood there in a spotlight, crying while the band continued playing. Kanye then reportedly walked off the stage, regained his composure and returned to perform his hit song Stronger.

He was very nervous, seemed to have gathered himself up, and had a lot of energy. He kept shouting out to the audience, 'I need you... I need you right now.' and the public was screaming back. It was magic."

Bangladesh Hit By Fierce Cyclone - Death Toll At 2,300

This is breaking my heart.........

The death toll from Bangladesh's most devastating storm in a decade climbed to at least 2,300 on Sunday and relief officials warned the figure could jump sharply as rescuers reach more isolated areas.

The government said it has allocated $5.2 million in emergency aid for rebuilding houses. Many foreign governments and international groups have pledged to help, including the United States, which offered $2.1 million and the United Nations, which promised $7 million.

The German government offered $731,000, the European Union with $2.2 million and the British government with $5 million. France pledged $730,000 in aid, while the Philippines announced it would send a medical team.

Thanks to an effective early warning system, at least 1.5 million coastal villagers fled to shelters before the storm. But Islam and his family chose to stay at home.....Sidr's 150-mph winds smashed tens of thousands of homes in southwestern Bangladesh and ruined thousands of acres of crops.

Every year, storms batter Bangladesh, a country of 150 million, often killing large numbers of people. The most deadly recent storm was a tornado that leveled 80 villages in northern Bangladesh in 1996, killing 621 people.

Only two people were killed in Bangladesh by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was spawned off Indonesia's Sumatra island by a magnitude-9 earthquake, hitting a dozen countries and killing at least 216,858, according to government and aid agency figures considered the most reliable in each country.

Hurricane Katrina, the most destructive natural disaster in U.S. history, killed 1,600 people across the Gulf Coast, destroyed or severely damaged more than 200,000 homes and made more than 800,000 people homeless overnight.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE | On Strike - Live at UCB Theatre

I heard it was much funnier than anything that has aired on NBC this season.......

About 150 audience members in a tiny Manhattan theater were the only folks in the world to witness a totally new "Saturday Night Live" episode starring guest host Michael Cera and musical guest Yo La Tengo.

The "SNL" cast and writers collaborated on staging the special "Saturday Night Live — On Strike!" event at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre to benefit the behind-the-scenes staff affected by the strike.

The performance included all the trappings of a typical "SNL" episode, such as a host monologue, musical performance, "Weekend Update" news segment and several comedy sketches — all without any commercial interruption.

"It was a little dirtier than usual," audience member Birch Harms said.

A typical "SNL" episode features about seven sketches, but the cast performed about 15 original sketches during the two-hour event. Thompson said he starred in a sketch called "Hip-Hop Whodunit," a mock game show about solving hip-hop crimes, and also appeared as a French comedian during "Weekend Update."

"They didn't have elaborate costumes or graphics or anything," audience member Risa Sang-urai said. "Sometimes they would explain things or wear wigs. It wasn't anything too elaborate, but you didn't really need it."

Everyone in the current cast participated in the event, except Maya Rudolph. Past cast members Rachel Dratch and Horatio Sanz also performed. Singer Norah Jones made a cameo appearance, according to audience members.

STEVIE WONDER | Live at Madison Square Garden + Prince & Tony Bennett Surprise Guests

Stevie Wonder played to a packed, but not sold out, Madison Square Garden on Saturday. This being his first proper New York City gig in over a decade, he pulled out all the hits and thankfully skipped over the majority of his wanky eighties crap.

Before the first note was even played, Stevie asked for a moment of silence to honor those lost who died on 9/11, before saying that his mother's death inspired him to return to the road.

Stevie seemed more energetic than his age would ever have let on. You could tell that he wanted to rock this gigatnic space. While the older crowd sat for most of the show, Stevie did everything to get them up and dancing. I also loved that he still could hammer out an anthem while spreading some wisdom, like during "Innervisions" andwhen he went on a passionate tirade about all the things he's disgusted with in 2007, culminatin with him screaming, "I can't believe in 2007 we have this silly bullshit called Jenna 6!" It was fantastic and got the crowd engaged.

Tony Bennett came out for “For once in My Life," but that was nothing compared to when Prince came strutting out onto the stage during "Superstition." They jammed on the song so hard, with the Purple One hitting his guitar in a call-and-response to Stevie's excellent keyboard work.

He finished the show on "As," his mother's favorite song, that was as emotional as ever. A brilliant show.........

RADIOHEAD | Summer U.S. Tour, Coachella, Best of 1997

1997 was one of the best years ever in music. Not only was it one of the few remaining year's in which people would line-up at midnight for new records, but it saw the release of The Verve's Urban Hymns, Spiritualized's Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, and Radiohead's OK Computer.

All three acts are strongly rumored to appear at the 2008 Coachella Festival. That rumor got more credible today:

As the plans look like now, Radiohead will start their upcoming tour in America. When asked by Steve Lamacq Ed O’Brien confirmed that the band are indeed starting their tour in May.

Ed said that it’s still ‘up in the air’ and that plans might change, but Radiohead will tour in May, June/July, kicking off for a few weeks in America. Ed: “We probably go out in May.”

When asked if Glastonbury is on the agenda, Ed said: “Everything is on the agenda. We're sort of finalizing dates at the moment. We’ll see. If they want us. We don’t know yet. We’ve got schedule A, schedule B, schedule C. None of this is confirmed.”

Awesome. I'm already stoked for this tour! Anyway, in 1997, we were a lil' hand-printed zine in New York City called Product Shop NYC Presents American Mod. We interviewed folks like D-Generation, The Raincoats, The Vaselines, The Make-Up, Sylvia Buck, Kenneth Anger, Jonathan Fire*Eater, Weezer, and numerous other folks. Anyway, here's how we ranked the music of 1997 and I'm surprised how similiar my list would probably look today..........

DAFT PUNK | "Electroma" Screening + Alive Release Party

alive.jpgSomething is very much in the Brooklyn air.

Daft Punk are about to release their third live album, Alive 2007, and are throwing an awesome record release party at Studio B on Friday, December 7th. Yeah, I know it's not Daft Punk actually dj'ing the party, but it does have a Daft Punk cover dj crew (???) doing a four hour set of Daft Punk songs, remixes and related jams.

As long as Faux Punk and Dave Bruno (Slap You In Public) spin lots of Daft Punk and get this crowd dancing, then I'm sure it's going to be a sick party. Those tickets are now on sale and cost $8.

On a related note, Daft Punk's Electroma will have two screenings at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on December 22nd. Tickets for the 9pm and 11pm screenings (no dance party) go on sale Friday, November 23rd and cost $10.........

POLITCAL JUNK | Mclellan Admits Lying For Bush & Cheney

An excerpt from former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's upcoming memoir, What Happened: Inside The Bush White House and What's Wrong With Washington:

The most powerful leader in the world had called upon me to speak on his behalf and help restore credibility he lost amid the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. So I stood at the White house briefing room podium in front of the glare of the klieg lights for the better part of two weeks and publicly exonerated two of the senior-most aides in the White House: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.

There was one problem. It was not true.

I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice President, the President's chief of staff, and the President himself.

Mere hours after the publishers put the excerpt up on their website, McClellan was obviously getting pressured to change his tune and issued a statement saying, "the president didn't know it was not true." So when he very clearly wrote that "It was not true," he was just kidding? Hmmm. Still a puppet douchebag.......

Valerie Plame's response to all this after the jump.......

WORLD CUP | 2010 South Africa Qualifying Round Drawing

The march to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa started this weekend with the drawing of the qualifying round match-ups. You can view all the groupings here.

The biggest news was that England and Croatia will be in the same group, which comes just days after England's embarassing loss to Croatia at Webley, which resulted in them being eliminated from the 2008 Euro Cup tourney.

England's loss came right on the heels of Israel's amazing 91st minute victory over the far-more-talented Russia, which perfectly set up an Englist advancement - All the Brits needed was a tie against Croatia to win the group and advance............

This series has been happening upstairs at Pianos every year since 1845 (or something, I have a hard time reading Roman numerals), so it's a real honor to be involved. Matt and Jen picked the STELLAR That Fleeting World to go with Wes Liberated Matter's Bess Rogers. That should be interesting......

POLITICAL JUNK | Chuck Norris Endorses Huckabee

Born-again fundamentalist Chuck Norris is endorsing Mike Huckabee for President. The above ad, which is not a joke and is running in Iowa, seems to be getting a ton of press and really helping the former fundamentalist Southern Baptist minister in the polls.

Huckabee has gone from a long shot candidate to polling at third place in Iowa, with a good chance of winning the January caucus. Let's meet Huckabee:

Huckabee wants to make laws abolishing abortions and constitional amendments blocking same-sex marriages and civil unions. He is against gun control and supports the death penalty. He wants to invade Iran and continue the war in Iraq. He wants to do away with a seperation of church and state and make school prayer mandatory. He also supports the idiotic teaching of creationism in schools..........

SPIN | Springsteen & Win Butler Interview, Cover

First time I've been interested in reading Spin in about four years.......
spin__arcade_bruce.jpg
"I want people to look onstage and see themselves. That idea of the band as a representative community -- all the bands I like have some element of that. It's thrilling when you see that communication. Pop records are fun -- [Rihanna's] "Umbrella" I can enjoy tremendously -- but what I'm drawn to are bands where there's an active collective imagination going on between them and their audience. That's what I love about Arcade Fire -- the first time I saw you guys, I thought, "There's a whole town going on up there, a whole village onstage." There's an imagined world you've made visual in front of your fans' eyes, and it's a really lovely thing."
-Bruce Springsteen, Spin, December 2007

POLITICAL JUNK | Lott To Retire, Caught In Sex Scandal?

lott.jpg
With Trent Lott announcing his retirement, rumors went flying that it was because Hustler was going to expose the conservative-racist Senator's interest in rent boys. Well, it seems that rumor has been squashed by the male escort in question, but Hustler publisher and free speech crusader Larry Flint has posted the following message on his official website:

“Hustler magazine has received numerous inquiries regarding the involvement of Larry Flynt and Hustler in the resignation of Trent Lott.

Senator Lott has been the target of an ongoing Hustler investigation for some time now, due to confidential information that we have received.”

That would bring the total number of congressmen exposed in sex scandals by Hustler to four. Hmmmm........

KEVIN DuBROW (QUIET RIOT) | In Memoriam, 1955 - 2007

quiet_riot.jpg
The voice behind "Cum on Feel the Noize" (originally written and recorded by English band Slade in 1973) and "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" has passed away.

Quiet Riot frontman Kevin DuBrow was found dead in his Las Vegas home on Sunday by friends, according to a report on thevegaseye.com. In 1983 DuBrow led Quiet Riot into the history books when the band's debut album, "Metal Health," became the first heavy metal album to top the Billboard Album charts. A cause of death was not known at press time. DuBrow was 52.

Cool Quiet Riot fact: The original band was started by Randy Rhoads in 1975, but broke up in 1979 when Rhoads went on to join Ozzy Osbourne's band

LOU REED & JULIAN SCHNABEL | Tonight at Apple Store Soho

Julian Schnabel and Lou Reed will be throwing down at the Apple Store in Soho tonight, November 28th, at 7pm.

Filmmaker/pompous painter Julian Schnabel and living legend/part-time a-hole Lou Reed discuss the role of music in films and screen scenes from "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly."

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (for the meaning see diving bell and butterfly) is a translation of the French memoir Le scaphandre et le papillon by journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby. It describes what his life is like after suffering a massive stroke that left him with a condition called locked-in syndrome.

Here's some background on "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly":

The entire book was written by Bauby blinking his left eyelid. An amanuensis repeatedly recited a frequency-ordered alphabet, until Bauby blinked to choose the next letter. The book took about 200,000 blinks to write and each word took approximately two minutes. The book chronicles everyday events and what they are like for a person with locked-in syndrome. These events include playing at the beach with his family, getting a bath, and meeting visitors. The book was published on March 6, 1997. It received excellent reviews and sold 150,000 copies in the first week. Two days after the French version of the book was published, Bauby died.

The book has been adapted as a feature film of the same name, directed by Julian Schnabel and starring Mathieu Amalric (Munich, Marie Antoinette) as Bauby.

BLACK CROWES | Performing New Album, "Warpaint," Straight Through On Mini-Tour

The Black Crowes will release Warpaint, their first album of all-new studio material in seven years on March 4th. The album will be independently released on the band’s own newly formed Silver Arrow Records and distributed through Megaforce/Sony Red BMG.

The album’s complete track listing is: “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution,” “Walk Believer Walk,” “O, Josephine,” “Evergreen,” “We Who See The Deep,” “Locust Street,” “Movin’ On Down The Line,” “Wounded Bird,” “God’s Got It,” “There’s Gold In Them Hills,” and “Whoa Mule.”

After some disappointing summer shows, the band will try to amp fans up by performing Warpaint in its entirety during a special run of “One Night Only” shows beginning on March 4. These shows are supposedly being booking into small venues, so these will likely be hard tickets to get........

IZZY STRADLIN | 8th Solo Record + Axl's First New Material Is Released On Sebastian Bach's Solo Album

Izzy1.jpgIzzy Stradlin, always the coolest member of Guns 'N Roses, has just released his 8th solo record and its an acoustic affair called Fire. This is actually Stradlin's second album of 2007. In March, he put out the rocking Miami. I wish Axl was this interested in putting out new music.

With his record sales diminishing since his Ju Ju Hounds project, the rockabilly rhythm guitarist has released his last three albums only via the interweb.

Fire happens to have some killer songs. It helps that Izzy surrounds himself with great musicians from Reverend Horton Heat and Jeff Buckley's band.

Also, in stalker news, Izzy just bought a new house. This internet thing can sure lead you to some creepy information about people.

In related news, Axl sings three tracks on Sebastian Bach's new album, Angel Down. Axl can be heard on the classy sounding "(Love Is) A Bitchslap," a cover of Aerosmith's "Back In The Saddle," and "Stuck Inside," which he co-wrote................
