Radiohead are about to change the entire record industry. As one of the most popular modern rock acts currently in existance, they've opted to release their seventh album themselves, where you can either download it on October 10th or you can get a discbox version of the album on December 3rd that comes with an extra disc of completely new material.
The album, In Rainbows, has been complete for about a month, but the band has said they are meeting with labels about its release. The decision to put the album out with no label, no advance copies, no advertising, and no major in-store support is an amazing chance to really test the waters of how far a major band can go without a major label.
Oh, and did I mention that its pay what you want! Ha. Awesome. Here's the tracklisting:

No, it's not awesome, that's the knee-jerk reaction from people who don't understand that this does more harm than good for the industry. The fact that they released it without a label is great and revolutionary. The fact that it is "pay what you want" makes a mockery of the decision and perpetuates the devaluation of music.

are you serious? you dont think its great and revolutionary that a group wants to release music and is expecting little to nothing in return?

what the hell do u know about it telex? the devaluation of music was perpetuated by the likes of all of us who get music p2p and conveniently forget to purchase those albums or buy tickets to those shows. the devaluation has come from the industry and the fan's reaction to their decaying model. seriously do you even know what you are talking about?

As a consumer, do I think it's good that the greatest band in the world is giving away their music to me for free, of course. I'd like to get as many things for free as possible, maybe my apartment and my car too. As someone who cares deeply about the future of the music industry, I think it was a mistake for the reason I gave above. Digital music (legal) has made giant strides over the past few years and is obviously going to be the dominant revenue stream for album/track sales relatively soon. The fact that one of the most anticipated releases by one of the most influential bands in history is being given away for free digitally, in my opinion is the wrong message to send to a scattered industry. Value given for value is always the correct path.

My boyfriend spends too much time on websites like this. I hate all those sources! They must be abandoned!

I think that people should communicate, no matter where they do it – in real life or in Internet.
