HILLY KRISTAL | 1932 - 2007, In Memoriam

I've been out of it for the past couple days and just heard the sad news that CBGB's owner Hilly Kristal passed away. We were at his goodbye to CBGB's party, his Joey Ramone Memorial, as well as throwing one of the last shows ever at the venue (with our friends at Gothamist). We always liked him. He will be missed......

Please excuse our absence from the blogosphere. We are currently resting our retinas. We hope to return shortly........

PUNKCAST.COM | 10-Year Anniversary Party & Screening

punkcast10years_R2.jpgPunkcast.com is turning 10 years old. Joly MacFie is 56 and has probably been to more shows than you, me and everybody else reading at this moment combined – and he is still out there. You may have seen or stood behind the ripe old British guy with a thick natty ponytail and grimy shirt, peering through the lens of his video camera at a show.

He has uploaded 1190 episodes of video and probably has an archive much larger than that. I don't think there is anybody but Joly who has watched all 1190 episodes. A highlight reel spanning the past ten years of New York music is an easier pill to swallow.

He is having a party and screening this Friday at Secret Robot Project. Whatever he shows, will be ten years of New York music history in the making.

JAMIE T | Bowery Show, After Party, Interview

jamie-t_reminder.jpg

Jamie T is coming back to the US with his band The Pacemakers. He has no problem switching up his songs to fit the occasion. He may grace the stage solo with his acoustic guitar at some point this tour but expect a more ferocious and rowdy version of his songs with a full band.

Come to the show at Bowery on Thursday. The rising Brooklyn band High Places is opening. Immediately following the show, swing by the After Party at Loreley (7 Rivington Street btw Bowery & Chrystie) because we will be DJing.

Also, Jamie T joined us on Product Shop NYC Blog Radio the last time he was in town and we have posted a part of that interview below.

MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS | Pre-Taped, Lip-Synched, Short-Temper, White-Trash, Success!

brit_mtv.jpg
This year's MTV Vide Music Awards sucked big time. It was a disaster on so many levels (It was only missing 2004 mega-embarassment of Eva Langoria declaring that Hurricane Katrina won't stop this party). You know that Britney bombed, but here are some of the lowlights that you were not reported:

::The VMA's featured numerous cut-aways to celebrity suite parties hosted by Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy and Foo Fighters. These rooms featured pathetic 30 second live perfomances and weren't even live. The parties were all pretaped a couple of days before the show nd then edited into the telecast to appear live........

::After being shut out for a second year in a row, Kanye West has vowed to boycott MTV after missing out on five awards at the Video Music Awards on Sunday........

And what the hell, here's some gossip on still-flashing-her-shaven-crotch (NSFW) Britney Spears' disaster:

On Saturday, the day before the VMAs, Spears was scheduled to arrive at rehearsal at around 1 p.m. Our spy said, "She didn't even get to Las Vegas until 4:30 p.m. It was ridiculous . . . The production people at MTV were freaking out . . . Nobody can tell Britney what to do anymore. No one can control her. She is a mess." "She went to her hotel room and ordered a bunch of food and some frozen margaritas," the spy said. "She came down, like, an hour later with a frozen margarita in her hand."

But expect more of this crap cause a whole lot of folks tuned in this year:

The VMAs telecast, from 9 p.m.-11 p.m. Sunday, averaged 7.08 million total viewers and 5 million viewers 12-34, up about 23% from last year. That was the most viewers in the demo for any ad-supported (thus excluding Disney Channel) cable telecast this year.

POLITICAL JUNK | Patraeus Reports To Congress About War

patraeus.jpg
General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are currently talking about the Iraq war before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Do you think these hearings will result in any changes? Is Petraeus painting a rosey picture? Are our brave troops being improperly used? Is the Bush's surge really working? Did Patraeus hint at attacking Iran before the end of Bush's term? Is the Anbar Province an appropriate bellwether for a U.S. victory in Iraq? When should we withfraw our troops?

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN | Tour Sells Out, Magic Leaks

Yesterday morning, Springsteen's four area shows sold out in ten minutes. The tour is in support of Magic, which leaked this weak.

While I loved We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, I find Devils & Dust and The Rising to be flawed but strong records and like his last two proper records, Magic has its dose of sub-par AOR-filler, but it also includes some moments of true brilliance.

The first standout tracks are "Livin' In The Future," which easily could pass for an outtake from The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle. The sax is smoking. The groove is undeniable. And Bruce's vocal sound as energetic and youthful as ever.

The other standout is "Terry's Song," a song that seems inspired by the Seeger Sessions and was written for the late Terry Magovern, whom was Bruce's assistant for the past 23 years. Here's part of Bruce's eulogy for Terry:

I first met Terry in 1972. I'd just returned from California after an unsuccessful attempt to live as a musician in the Bay Area. Steve's band, the Sundance Blues Band, were booked at the Captain's Garter in Neptune, New Jersey. I sat in with Steve and we played to a packed and cheering crowd. This was a job we needed, bad. I was broke. After the show, sweaty and triumphant, Steve and I went back to meet the manager of the place, figuring we were this guy's dream come true. There behind the desk, windbreaker on, stood a large and not very friendly light-haired man. He explained slowly and carefully, that yes, while the crowd was large and loud, that no one was drinking. They were too busy listening to the music, and if we hadn't noticed this was a bar, therefore, our services in the future would not be necessary. This was my first introduction to the clear, hard headed thinking of Terry Magovern. He fired me! It was the beginning of a long and beautiful relationship.

FOO FIGHTERS | "The Pretender," Cover Arcade Fire

The Foo Fighters catch a whole lot of shit cause they're gigantic, will never be as important or good as Nirvana, make goofy videos, and are a pretty harmless bunch of fellas. They're an easy band to overlook, but the fact stands that Dave Grohl and company continue to turn out some really good (not great) music. They also use their success to give exposure to bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Mastadon, Tenacious D, Blonde Redhead, and lots of others.

Their new record, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, drops on September 25th. The first single is "The Pretender" and it ain't bad.......

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS | White Stripes Cancel, Hot Freaks

According to Austin 360, The White Stripes have pulled out of their much-anticipated set at the 2007 Austin City Limits Festival. The official excuse is that sickness is causing this cancellation, but come on, they still have a five days to recover!

At least fans won't have to decide between seeing the White Stripes or Arcade Fire.

TIn related ACL news, more tickets will be released on Wednesday, September 12th, for the blogger curated Hot Freaks party featuring Art Brut, Grizzly Bear, Brazos, Crazy Sexy Rainbow, Yellow Fever, The Rosebuds, Sparrow House, and St. Vincent . RSVP here......

CANCELLED | Kanye, Yorigo y Gabriela, Noisettes, Kaiser Chiefs, White Stripes, GZA & Jamie Lidell

Yesterday, we told you the White Stripes cancelled their Austin City Limits appearance, but now comes news that they've cancelled their entire Fall tour beause Meg "is suffering from acute anxiety and is unable to travel at this time." Does that mean that continously slimming Meg is in Rehab? Hmmm. Or maybe she's preggers!

Anyway, the Stripes aren't alone in cancelling upcoming gigs. Here's a rundown of some recent bailouts:

::Rodrigo y Gabriela have cancelled their ACL performance and some of their upcoming tour dates. Blame: Exhaustian......

::Kanye West cancelled appearances and performances on NBC's Today Show, MTV's TRL, and Late Night with David Letterman. Blame Ego......

::The Kaiser Chiefs have cancelled all their U.S. dates except for ACL and their New York Beacon Theatre show. They say they're cancelling the other shows to record their new album. Way to screw over fans and make sure they don't buy album three. Blame: Management hates Amerca.....

::The Noisettes have canceled their upcoming North American headlining tour. Blame: Exhaustian.......

::GZA's Liquid Swords performance at McCarren Park Pool, with special guest Jamie Lidell, has been cancelled. Blame: Poor ticket sales........

THE VEILS | Bowery Ballroom Review

theveils_10Sept07_01.jpg

The Veils played the Bowery Ballroom Monday night. The last time they were in New York three months ago, they were starting their tour at The Mercury Lounge and Union Hall. The set list has changed some and they thankfully picked up a better keyboard. But Finn Andrews is still just as volatile in front of a microphone and has yet to take off that hat. The other members of the band don't match his rollercoaster of emotion so he commands the attention. Most of the show could be seen on his face.

For the encore, Finn returned in of a pair of screaming stars and stripes pants, which he said that he bought in San Francisco. At the store, he asked woman at the register if there were any special care instructions for washing the pants with his other clothes. She said, "Nope, these colors don't run." Unfortunately, after that fine display of patriotism and galvanizing rock, The Veils must now head back to New Zealand.

AHMET ERTEGUN TRIBUTE CONCERT | Led Zep To Reunite, Also Playing: Pete Townshend, Foreigner & Paolo Nutini

Coverdale-Page Led Zeppelin are reuniting. Snore. I'm guessing this will eventually turn into a world tour sometime in 2008. Here's the details:

Rock legends Led Zeppelin are to reunite for a one-off, £125-a-ticket concert, it was announced today.

The band, who disbanded 27 years ago following the death of drummer John Bonham, confirmed they will perform at the O2, the former Dome, on November 26.

Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones will be joined on drums by John Bonham’s son Jason. The concert is a tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records, who died last year.

Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini, artists all touched by Ertegun’s guiding hand over the years, will also perform. Nutini was the final British artist that Ahmet mentored.

I remember falling in love with Annie Lennox when she did "Under Pressure" with David Bowie at A Tribute to Freddie Mercury. What a freaky momma. So many female and male artists owe this gal a pretty penny.

DNCHRD III: VNYL | Bring Some Vinyl to B-Sides

turntable.jpgAttention failed DJs, pirates with hooks, and people living in the 21st century: bring some of your useless vinyl to B-Sides tonight for LVHRD's VNYL pre-party.

They are collecting 90s dance records for DNCHRD III: VNYL on September 25th, which will be "part dance competition, part turntable battle, where the audience supplies the vinyl and dance crews go head-to-head." So sacrifice a record or two for the sake of a good party. This will be way more fun than that book burning they had last month.

Bring your records tonight and your dance moves next Tuesday. More info here.

DNCHRD III: VNYL PRE-PARTY
WHO: LVHRD
WHAT: Pre-Party for Dewar’s Master-Disaster DNCHRD III: VNYL.
WHERE: B-Side bar, 204 Ave B, btw 12th and 13th.
WHEN: Tuesday, September 18th, 7pm-12am.
BRING: Your favorite 90s dance record. VNYL = TCKT.

SEX PISTOLS | Reunion Part Two: 30th Anniversary of Never Mind the Bollocks

The Sex Pistols will celebrate the 30th anniversary of of Never Mind the Bollocks with a November 8th reunion show at London's Brixton Academy.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, September 19th at Noon for the Foo Fighters September 20th show at The Fillmore NY. The show is 16+, will call only, and costs $47.50! That doesn't include service charges, etc.

What's a bit fucked up is that the Foo's are doing another "surprise" show on September 24th at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles and to get into that show, you have buy a copy of their new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, through ticketmaster for $20.

New York City is getting robbed yo.........

BARACK OBAMA | NYC Rally, Washington Square Park

Senator Barack Obama will be taking his stump speech to New York City's Washington Square Park on September 27th, 2007. Gates open at 5:00pm. To get in, you must RSVP here.

I've heard his stump so many times at this point. I'm hoping he rolls out more substance and policy, but what Presidential candidate ever talks details. Ugh. Fucking politics man.

Speaking of the upcoming election, MTV News is looking for the next Tabitha Soren (Ugh, again). So if you want to be one of the folks MTV hires to cover the 2008 Presidential Elections you should go here and read all about their MYJO program (It pays). And to apply go here.......

THE OFFICE | Season 4 Preview, Rainn Wilson vs Kanye

I still think The Office (U.S. Version) should have ended last season. It had a great finale episode and that should have been it. Well, if the above "What I Did This Summer?" trailer proves anything, at least it seems to be some of the best sitcom writing on television.

Also, check out Rainn Wilson taking on Kanye West on The Emmy's "The Singing Bee" after the jump.....

STELLA | Catching Up with Black, Showalter & Wain

Did you know that Michael Ian Black wrote and directed a movie this summer called Wedding Daze that starred Jason Biggs (American Pie) and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers)? I didn't. I heard about The Ten but not this. Poor Mikey.

Michael Ian Black has an album coming out on Septembre 25th from Comedy Central Records called I am a Wonderful Man. He'll be touring with Michael Showalter, whose album, Sandwiches and Cats, will be released in October. Tour dates for the tour are after the jump.

And if you didn't know, David Wain has a weekly skit show on My Damn Channel. The latest episode is posted below.......

THE VIEW | New Host Believes World Is Flat, Creationism

Why the hell do producers let people like Sherri Shepard on television, let alone make her a co-host on The View? I know its for ratings and because it will make people talk about the show, but this is just willful ignorance on a whole new level of stupid. I never thought I'd say this, but I miss Rosie......

BLACKWATER | America's Private Military In Iraq

Blackwater USA is a private military company and security firm that has nearly 40,000 armed security contractors in Iraq. The U.S. government pays fthem nearly a $1 billion a year, making them an official, yet unofficial part of the U.S. army pressence in Iraq.

Even though the U.S. government pays them, helps equip them, and uses them to guard officials, bases, oil, etc, they are not counted in any Iraq tallies regarding the number of soldiers fighting or being killed in Iraq.

Now that the Iraqi government wants to kick Blackwater out of their country, the media is starting to look into this company. WNYC's Brian Lehrer Show did a very interesting piece about them. Listen and learn.........

FOO FIGHTERS | Tour Opener at The Fillmore, Setlist & Pictures

FOO_FIGHTERS_FILLMORE_0.jpg
Playing as a seven piece band, including the great Pat Smear on some of the older tracks, the Foo Fighters launched their tour in support of Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace with an intimate show at New York's The Fillmore.

The highlight for me was when they went from Nirvana b-side "Marigold" straight into an acoustic version of "My Hero" that had the energized crowd singing along. In fact, the folks who packed the floor sang just about every single line to every song. For "Everlong," Grohl best song, he went solo. They extended "Stacked Actors" into a marathon blues explosion that saw Grohl climbing The Fillmore's wall until he was near the balcony. The encore of "Home" found Grohl playing some piano, which was a nice touch.

PEARL JAM | Theatrical Release of Italian Tour Film, Vedder Goes Solo

Pearl Jam's Italian tour doc "Immagine in Cornice" will have a special one night screening in theatres around the U.S. In New York, the showing is on Tuesday, September 25th, at 8pm, at the Ziegfeld Theatre! Tickets are available here.

You can visit this site for information on the film and where its showing.

In related news, Eddie Vedder just released his first solo record, which is the soundtrack to Into The Wild. I don't know how the Sean Penn directed film is, but the book by Jon Krakauer is excellent. Vedder's best track is the John Fahey influenced one-minute track "Tuolumne."

Also, don't you hate when they change the cover of a book to the movie poster? It just makes me not want to buy the book anymore.........

POLITICAL JUNK | Republicans Fillibuster All Democrat Attempts To End Iraq War, Find Time To Blast MoveOn & Continue To Say Iraq Attacked America

It seems that President Bush has been sucessful in making sure the war in Iraq will continue until at least July 2008. This week saw the Republicans fillibuster two bills that would benefit U.S. soldiers and start a war withdrawal.

The first bill the Republicans fillibustered was written by Senators Jim Webb (D-VA) and Chuck Hagel (R-NA) would have cut off funding for combat in June 2008, plus promised soldiers that their minimum tour would be 10-12 months abroad with 20-24 months back in the state, which had been standard until 2002.The bill got a "yea" vote of 56-44, but was fillibustered by Republicans.

The second bill called for an immediate start to withdrawing troops. This bill got a "yea" vote of 53-47, but was fillibustered by Republicans.

Besides using the fillibuster, President Bush has said he would immediately veto either bill if they passed. So the war goes on and on and on and on.

The one thing the Republicans did do was successfully push through a resolution condemning an advertisement by MoveOn.org. Which makes me ask, 1) why the hell did the Democrats even let this waste of time resolution get brought to the floor and 2) how hypocritical is it that the Republicans will blast MoveOn.org for pointing out the Petraus has shamefully allowed himself to become a Presidential pawn, but they won't blast Ari Fleischer and his new far-right think tank - Freedoms Watch - for continuing to promote the complete lie that Iraq attacked America on September 11, 2001. Watch the shameful Republican funded ad here:

POLITICAL JUNK | Giuliani Speaks To NRA, Is Now Pro-Gun!

Holy Shit! Rudy Giuliani is a flip-flopper douchebag who will say and do anything to get elected!

Since officially announcing his bid for President, the one-time anti-gun, pro-gay, pro-choice, cross-dressing, moved in with a gay couple after I was caught cheating on my wife Republican has said that he is against gay marriage or civil unions, would not work to protect Roe v Wade, and on Friday, he told the National Rifle Association that he is pro-gun!!!

“I believe that law enforcement should focus on enforcing the laws that exist on the books as opposed to passing new extensions of laws,” Mr. Giuliani said. He added that his views have been shaped by his time as a prosecutor, mayor and even by the Sept. 11 attacks, which he said, “puts a whole different emphasis on what America has to do to protect itself.”

At Friday’s forum, he was asked by an audience member if he still supported some of the specific actions he took to limit gun ownership and hold gun manufacturers liable for making a weapon used in a crime. In response, Mr. Giuliani again sought to put it into the context of his job as mayor.

“At the time, what I was doing during the time that I was mayor was taking advantage of every law and every interpretation of every law that I could think of to reduce crime,” he said. Mr. Giuliani’s speech was interrupted by applause on several occasions as he talked about taking on criminals.

Giuliani saiv very different things about the National Rifle Association during a Charlie Rose interview on May 31, 1995........

WHITE STRIPES | Meg White Sex Tape, Anxiety

We thought Meg's "acute anxiety" was code for rehab or being preggers, but if someone was holding a sex tape over my head, I'd be anxious as fuck as well. Poor Meg. Sure, we've always had a cruch on her, but never would we have wanted something like this to happen to her.

Sadly, it appears that some douchebag has indeed placed a sex tape he made with Meg White online for the world to watch. We weren't going to post about this but we've gotten it emailed to us like fifty times and it seems to be just about everywhere already, so if you want to watch it, you can download it here. If this is real, then we feel super bad for Meg, who I'm guessing never wanted to be in the same category as Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, and Paris Hilton. If it's not her, well then, someone sure looks a whole lot like Meg.......

POLITICAL JUNK | Ahmadinejad: This MoFo Is Crazy

I think even the most far-right and left folks can agree that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is absolutely fucking bonkers. His "speech/rant" at Columbia University was shown by just about network and proved him to be completely insane. He said that as an "academic" it is his job to "continue to research" if the holocaust happened, that no gays live in Iran, and that he's a big fan of Jews.

While I'm still pretty surprised that Columbia invited Ahmadinejad to speak - although the school did employ Edward Said - it was nice to see Columbia President Lee Bollinger hold the Iranian President to the fire.

"Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator," Bollinger said, to loud applause.

He said Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust might fool the illiterate and ignorant.

"When you come to a place like this it makes you simply ridiculous," Bollinger said. "The truth is that the Holocaust is the most documented event in human history."

"You are either brazenly provocative or astonishingly uneducated," Bollinger told Ahmadinejad about the leader's Holocaust denial. "Will you cease this outrage?"

Ahmadinejad said he simply wanted more research on the Holocaust, which he said was abused as a justification for Israeli mistreatment of the Palestinians.

KATE NASH | U.S. Debut at Luna Lounge, Review & Setlist + Jenny Owen Youngs Opens Show

KATE_NASH_LUNA_BROOKLYN.jpg
Kate Nash and Jenny Owen Youngs played the Luna Lounge on Monday night.

For Kate, this was her first ever show in the States and she delivered an excellent set of melodic tunes. Playing with a three piece backing band (drums, violin, bass/guitar), you could certainly hear the Tori Amos / Regina Spektor influence. Regardless of the lack of originality, she clearly held the attention of the packed house and put on a splendid performance. I would have liked to have heard "Dickhead," but hopefully she'll play that on Tuesday at Joe's Pub.

I had no idea that Jenny Owen Youngs was on the bill until I arrived at the Luna Lounge. As a fan, I was totally psyched for this surprise addition, but sadly she didn't go over so well. Playing solo, she sounded excellent, especially on the fabulous "Fuck Was I," but it didn't play well to this chatty crowd. The only time she got the audience to notice her was during her horrible finally of a cover of Nelly's "Hot In Here." She really needs to lose that from her set.........

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN | Third Rehearsal Show - Ticket Info, First Warm-Up Show Setlist

Bruce and the E Street Band have announced a third rehearsal show. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept 25), at noon, for a rehearsal show to be held Friday night (September 28) at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford.

Tickets, priced at $100, go on sale at noon tomorrow, Sept. 25 through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone only (201-507-8900, 212-307-7171, 866-448-7849). Tickets will not be sold online at Ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster outlets or at the Continental Arena Box Office. There is a two ticket limit.

They are not selling tickets for the entire venue. They will only be selling a couple thousand ickets, enough for a limited number of general admission and reserved seating tickets.. Tickets must be picked up the night of the concert at the Arena Box Office will call. The credit card used to purchase the tickets and a photo ID will be required.

The first dress rehearsal show took place on Monday night at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park. The band played a solid, if sloppy, two hour set on their arena sized stage that took almost half the venue, which may explain why the shows sold even faster than one would have imagines a near-impossible to get into show could sell out.

The warm-up setlist included seven songs from Bruce's upcoming Magic, but also included some gems like "Candy's Room" and the super rarity "Thundercrack," but didn't include any "Tenth Ave Freeze Out" or "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)." Thankfully, the E Street band switches up the setlists every night (unlike U2) and they're likely just making sure they can play the new songs........

WHITE STRIPES | Deny It's Meg In Sex Tape

Press Here Publicity, who represent The White Stripes, have issued a statement regarding the week old Meg White sex tape that made its way around the blogosphere yesterday:

Some people have a very twisted sense of humor and this prank is in particularly bad taste. The tape circulating on the internet as featuring Meg White is fake. It’s definitely not Meg.

That said, Meg still is suffering from this mysterious "acute anxiety" and this surely couldn't have helped that situation.......

VAN HALEN | Warm-Up Performance In Los Angeles

With the Van Halen tour scheduled to start in two weeks, the first of series of dress rehearsals took in Los Angeles. While we've been waiting to see this implode on itself, we have to admit that they sound pretty good. Rock Daily posted some bootlegged clips from the warm-up gig, including "Everybody Wants Some," which we've posted above..........

POLITICAL JUNK | Congress Wastes Time Talking Hip-Hop

master_p.jpg
While a war is going on, millions of U.S. citizens go uninsured and our environment continues to get polluted, what important issue did congress spend their morning discussing?

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection held a heading on "From Imus to Industry: The Business of Stereotypes and Degrading Images." Or to put it simply, lawmakers wasted a morning talking to record executives about hip-hop lyrics.

And yes, Master P was on hand to testify. Interestingly, he was one of the folks who came down hardest on rappers saying. The reformed gangsta, who now runs a label that only releases "clean" lyrics and artists, said, "I am not trying to take away anyone's freedom of speech, I'm concerned about the constant use of profanity. We need to clean up our lyrics, but not turn our backs on the entire hip-hop community, because they're not the problem. The artists are the puppets who are controlled by the puppeteers. It's time for accountability." He went on to blame music moguls who encourage hip-hop artists to push the envelope.

The result of the hearing? A big fat nothing was accomplished. Lawmakers and the music execs agree that censorship is wrong, but disagree on who to blame for the naughty language and sexual images. I blame Iraq.......

NEIL YOUNG | Chrome Dreams II, Tour + United Palace + Bridge School Benefit w/ Metallica, Tom Waits, Tegan & Sara, etc

Neil Young is one the only artist who can revisit one of his earlier records and now make it seems like a desperate attempt to relive his youth or more successful years. Seriously, does the world really need Queensryche to put out another Operation Mindcrime LP?

On October 16th, Neil will release Chrome Dreams II, his follow-up to Chrome Dreams, a legendary album from 1977 that had originally been scheduled for release but was shelved in favor of the brilliant American Stars 'N Bars.

His upcoming tour will see him traveling with Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, pedal steel guitarist and dobro player Ben Keith ("Harvest," "Comes A Time," "Harvest Moon") and bassist Rick Rosas ("Freedom," "Living With War," "This Note's For You").

The tour hits the United Palace Thetre on December 12th and 13th. Tickets go on sale Monday, October 1st, at 10am. A presale is now going on. Full tour dates after the jump..........

In addition to his Chrome Dream II acoustic/electronic tour, Neil is hosting the 21st Annual Bridge School Benefit. This years show will feature Metallica, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Vedder with Flea and Jack Irons, Tom Waits with Kronos Quartet,John Mayer, Tegan and Sara, Regina Spektor, and, of course, Neil himself.

POLITICAL JUNK | Two Federal Judges Find Patriot Act Unconstitutional

Not surprisingly, the U.S. constitution once again prevails against the USA Patriot Act:

Two provisions of the USA Patriot Act are unconstitutional because they allow search warrants to be issued without a showing of probable cause, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken ruled that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, as amended by the Patriot Act, "now permits the executive branch of government to conduct surveillance and searches of American citizens without satisfying the probable cause requirements of the Fourth Amendment."

This news comes a week after another federal judge found another provision of the USA Patriot Act to be unconstitutional:

A federal judge struck down controversial portions of the USA Patriot Act in a ruling that declared them unconstitutional yesterday, ordering the FBI to stop its wide use of a warrantless tactic for obtaining e-mail and telephone data from private companies for counterterrorism investigations.

It's nice to see that democracy moves so swiftly. After all, it's only been six years since the Patriot Act was enacted..........

POLITICAL JUNK | State Dep't Classifies Publicly-Available Iraq Corruption Document, Tells Blackwater to Not Cooperate With the Senate & For $190 Billion To Fund War

This is from TPMmuckraker: Rep. Henry Waxman wrote to Condoleezza Rice to complain, among other things, that her department promptly classified internal assessments of corruption in the Iraqi government when it learned that his House Oversight and Government Reform Committee sought them out. Among those documents: an 80-page U.S. Embassy-Baghdad report on pervasive Iraqi corruption leaked to The Nation's David Corn.

As it turns out, Steve Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists obtained a copy of the document last week -- before State had it classified -- and posted it on the FAS webpage. Click here to read the document that State doesn't want Waxman -- or, for that matter, you -- to read.

Here's a characteristic excerpt:
state-corrupt-report.jpg

Why is this important? Because President Bush and Congress are headed toward another showdown on war spending. This time sparring, the Pentagon is asking for over $190 billion in order to keep combat in Iraq afloat for another year. As the above document exposes, absolutely no real progress is being made in Iraq. It's all smoke and mirrors. To give the Pentagon and Bush the $190 BILLION would be a disaster for America and our soldiers abroad.

And speaking of our honorable soldiers fighting abroad. While our men and women in uniform conduct themselves as best they can, the U.S. government's private militia that is Blackwater continue to cause tons of trouble in Iraq. This week, the Senate finally started to look into how Blackwater has made themselves a bigger and more damaging pressence in Iraq than the U.S. military and how they go about enforcing their vigilante justice.

As the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee began gathering materials for hearings into Blackwater's murder of 11 Iraqi civilians, the State Department's Kiazan Moneypenny (Yes, that's his actual name), wrote Blackwater VP Fred Roitz to "advise" him of Blackwater's obligations under the terms of State's contract. Among them: "all documents and records (including photographs) generated during the performance of work under this contract shall be for the sole use of and become the exclusive property of the U.S. government." Read the entire leaked memo here.

I believe it was Reagan who said that "Government is here to protect people from their own government and not from themselves" What happens when the people that are put into office to protect us from our government are the one's who we need protecting from? Scary time my friends.........

POLITICAL JUNK | What Does the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Have In Common With Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

The world collectively laughted at Iran's President when he said the Iran has no gays, but here in America, we're about to honor a General who believes that being gay is immoral. This is from today's news:

Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, caused a stir at a Senate hearing Wednesday when he repeated his view that gay sex is immoral and should not be condoned by the military.

Pace, who retires next week, said he was seeking to clarify similar remarks he made in spring, which he said were misreported.

"We need to be very precise then, about what I said wearing my stars and being very conscious of it," he added. "And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."

Isn't that last line, "we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law," the exact type of sick and demented shit that you'd expect to hear from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and not an American! What the fuck is wrong with this asshole?!?! Seriously, is the American Taliban controlling the U.S. Armed Forces?

PATTI SMITH | Opening for The Black Crowes in NYC

I don't know how The Black Crowes pulled this one off, but they've gotten Patti Smith and Her Band to open up for them at the United Palace Theatre on October 30th and 31st........

PHIL SPECTOR | Mistrial Ruling, Second Trial Coming

spector.jpg
Lesson one: If you've already plead guilty and paid a fine for something like soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom, the only way to get the courts to potentially overturn the decision is to be a Senator. Can you imagine if some poor kid who admitted to some non-violent crime went before a judge months later to ask them to overturn his own guilty plea? The judge would laugh them out of court!

The second lesson of the day is that if you've killed someone, the only way to get out of it is to be a rich celebrity. With that said, Phil Spector is still a free man:

A mistrial was declared in the murder trial of legendary music producer Phil Spector on Wednesday after jurors said they were deadlocked, despite a clear majority believing he was guilty.

Judge Larry Paul Fidler discharged jurors at Los Angeles Superior Court after they said they were hopelessly stuck at 10-2 in favor of a conviction after 12 days of deliberations in the five-month-long hearing.

Prosecutors said they would seek a fresh trial for Spector, who is accused of shooting dead B-movie actress Lana Clarkson at his mansion-like Los Angeles home in February 2003.

Spector's former chauffeur also gave damaging evidence, telling jurors that on the night of the shooting his employer had emerged from a doorway clutching a pistol in a bloodied hand to say: "I think I killed somebody."

As you know, Spector was arrested on February 3, 2003, of suspicion of murder after the body of 40-year-old nightclub hostess and B movie-actress Lana Clarkson of Los Angeles was found at his mansion, Pyrenees Castle, in Alhambra, California. But did you know that Spector married 26 year-old aspiring singer and actress Rachelle Short (pictured above) on September 1, 2006? Seriosly, who would marry that ugly, insane, and likely-killer? Rachelle has obviously got some of her own issues..........

BILL O'REILLY | Talking Points: I Am Racist

oreillymad.jpgAh, the casual racism of Bill O'Reilly:

"I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship." Later, during a discussion with National Public Radio senior correspondent and Fox News contributor Juan Williams about the effect of rap on culture, O'Reilly asserted: "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea.' You know, I mean, everybody was -- it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all."

And he has every right to say his little off-the-cuff racist remarks, just like any hate-monger does, but it's a sad state when major companies like Westwood One or even the far-right News Corp allows a racist to use their airwaves. Then again, he wasn't fired after the hypocrite was caught cheating on his wife with former producer, Andrea Mackris. If you remember, in the lawsuit she filed against him, she had recordings of him saying the following:

I would kinda put my arm -- it's one of those mitts, those loofa mitts you know, so I got my hands in it... and I would put it around front, kinda rub your tummy a little bit with it, and then with my other hand I would start to massage your boobs, get your nipples really hard... 'cuz I like that and you have really spectacular boobs...

So anyway I'd be rubbing your big boobs and getting your nipples really hard, kinda kissing your neck from behind... and then I would take the other hand with the falafel thing and I'd put it on your pussy but you'd have to do it really light, just kind of a tease business.

What a class act........

SMASHING PUMPKINS | Fan Dies At Vancouver Show

Tragedy has struck the Smashing Pumpkins non-reunion tour in Vancouver:

Vancouver police say the concert-goer was unconscious when he was dragged out of the crowd at the PNE Forum on Monday night.

One witness reported the man had fallen while crowd-surfing.

Police couldn't rule out the incident was linked to jostling and semi-violent dancing known as moshing but said there was nothing in the police report to indicate obvious signs of injury.

At a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Dublin in 1996, a 17-year-old girl was crushed and later died when the crowd of people surged to the front of the stage and began to surf over the crowd.

WES ANDERSON | "Hotel Chevalier," The Short Film Prequal To "The Darjeeling Limited" Free On iTunes

hotel-chevalier.jpg
In smart marketing move, Wes Anderson has posted "Hotel Chevalier," a 13 minute short film prequal to "The Darjeeling Limited," on iTunes for free. The short originally has been shown in theatres, before the actual film, but is now being spread around the internet to combat negative early reviews of the feature.

The entire short takes place in one hotel room with Jason Schwartman as Jack Whitman and Natalie Portman, credited simply as Jack's X-Girlfriend. The short features the break-up that leads Jack to meet his brothers Francis (Owen Wilson) and Peter (Adrien Brody) in India for the "Darjeeling' spiritual journey and adventure.

The song in the short is Peter Sarstedt's 1969 hit, "Where Do You Go My Lovely?" The song will also appear on the soundtrack and in the film "The Darjeeling Limited," which has its official premiere on the opening night of the New York Film Festival, this Friday, September 28th, at Lincoln Center.

You can click here to watch or download "Hotel Chevalier" from iTunes.......

BEIRUT | Three NYC Shows, La Blogothèque's Flying Club Cup Videos

Beirut just played three shows in New York City. Masonic Temple in Fort Greene, the Worldless Music Series at the Society for Ethical Culture and the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Surprisingly, these shows weren't nearly as blogged about as their two make-up dates at the Bowery last spring. Did you go see Zach and company this time around? What you think?

La Blogothèque filmed Beirut performing all the tracks off of their new album, The Flying Club Cup, in various locations around Brooklyn. Each track could be a future video, they're all done so well. They're still a couple more to be released, but I've posted the ones that are out so far. And yes, that's Edward Droste from Grizzly Bear singing on "Cliquot".....

Track 1 - Nantes - Shot in Brooklyn, Sept 8th, 2007

Track 4 - La Banlieue - Shot in Brooklyn, Sept 10th, 2007

Track 5 - Cliquot - Shot in Brooklyn, Sept 10th, 2007

Track 6 - Penalty - Shot in Brooklyn, Sept 9th, 2007

Track 7 - Forks and Knives (Le fête) - Shot in Brooklyn, Sept 12th, 2007

Track 9 - Un dernier verre (pour la route) - Shot in Brooklyn, Sept 8th, 2007

SEX PISTOLS | Reunion Comes To Los Angeles

The Sex Pistols' one-off reunion club show has turned into three shows at London's Brixton Academy, one mega-gig at the Manchester Arena, and a U.S. date where John Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock will play the Roxy in Los Angeles on October 25th.

There will be no tickets sold for the L.A. show.. Listen to Indie 103.1 (online or on the radio in Los Angeles) to win your way in to the show. Be the 10th caller when you hear a Sex Pistols song starting tomorrow, Saturday, September 29th.

How long until they book a New York City date? My guess is another week or so..........

POLITICAL JUNKS | Neo-Cons Label Soldiers Who Question The War As "Phony Troops"

While Republicans in congress wasted time debating a MoveOn.org advertisement calling for General Patraues to give an honest assessment of the war in Iraq, their own echo chamber has been labeled any military personnel who is for a withdrawal from Iraq as a ""The phony soldiers."

This "phony soldiers" term has been making the rounds in numerous right-wing media outlets and yesterday, it reached the loudest neo-con's soapbox as Rush Limbaugh started using the term on his national radio program.

Where is the outrage from the sitting Senators when a shock jock starts degrading American soldiers? What does Limbaugh and his right-wing friends (including frequent show guests like Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice) think of Staff Sgt. Yance T. Gray, 26, and Sgt. Omar Mora, 28, who were among the authors of “The War as We Saw It" and who died in combat shortly after the piece was published on August 19th:

In a lawless environment where men with guns rule the streets, engaging in the banalities of life has become a death-defying act. Four years into our occupation, we have failed on every promise, while we have substituted Baath Party tyranny with a tyranny of Islamist, militia and criminal violence. When the primary preoccupation of average Iraqis is when and how they are likely to be killed, we can hardly feel smug as we hand out care packages. As an Iraqi man told us a few days ago with deep resignation, "We need security, not free food."

In the end, we need to recognize that our presence may have released Iraqis from the grip of a tyrant, but that it has also robbed them of their self-respect. They will soon realize that the best way to regain dignity is to call us what we are -- an army of occupation -- and force our withdrawal.

Until that happens, it would be prudent for us to increasingly let Iraqis take center stage in all matters, to come up with a nuanced policy in which we assist them from the margins but let them resolve their differences as they see fit. This suggestion is not meant to be defeatist, but rather to highlight our pursuit of incompatible policies to absurd ends without recognizing the incongruities.

We need not talk about our morale. As committed soldiers, we will see this mission through.

I'm not against taking Rush off the air for his remarks, but I'm certainly for his program being removed from Armed Forces Radio. No soldier serving in Iraq or Afghanistan should have to listen to his propaganda.........

THE OFFICE | Season Four, No iTunes, Convention

funrun.JPG
The Office kicked off its 4th season on Thursday. I wish they ended the series last season, but they proved to still be one the best written sitcom on television. For those of you who saw the episode, titled "Fun Run," you may find yourself wanting some Michael Scott D.M.S.M.P.M.C. Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race memorabilia, which NBC is already selling here.

For those of you who missed the episode but wanted to see it, you'll be upset to hear that iTunes will not be selling any episodes of Season Four of The Office after a dispute with NBC and and the shows production company over money. The only way to download the show is through Amazon's Unbox/Tivo service, which absolutely sucks cause you can't put the video onto any sort of portable media play (ie ipods, zune, etc). Oh well, office politics are a bitch.

And for those super obsessed fans of The Office, you may want to make your way to The Office Convention in Scanton, PA, from October 26 - 28th! Scheduled to appear are Leslie David Baker (Stanley), Brian Baumgartner (Kevin), Creed Bratton (Creed), Kate Flannery (Meredith), Mindy Kaling (Kelly), Angela Kinsey (Angela), Oscar Nunez (Oscar), Bobby Ray Shafer (Bob Vance - Vance Refrigeration), Phyllis Smith (Phyllis), and more members of the cast are likely to join. More information about the NBC hosted festival here and you can buy tickets here. I just hope Scrantonicity rocks out live.........

In the wake of the excellent Grinderman, Nick Cave's next release will be the soundtrack to the Brad Pitt film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The instrumental soundtrack is composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Cave also makes a short appearance in the film where he sings a small drunken little waltz about Jesse James. See if you can spot Cave in the below clip, which is soundtracked by his composition......

If this news didn't excite you, then maybe you'll be happy to hear that Nick Cave and Bad Seeds will be releasing their next album, currently titled Lift Lazarus Lift, in the late winter/early spring. A gigantic world tour is also being planned.......

POLITICAL JUNK | Newt Decides on Presidential Bid

Newt Gingrich, the disgraced U.S. House Speak who led the campaign to impeach Clinton for having an affair with an intern even though he was cheating on his wife and who had the nerve to deliver divorce papers to his wife while she was in the hospital being treated for cancer, has made his official statement regarding his highly rumored Presidential run:

Gingrich on Saturday decided against running for president in 2008, less than a day after the Republican indicated publicly that he would spend the next month exploring the viability of a White House bid.

Gingrich said the last-minute change of heart, which came as aides readied the newtnow.org website and prepared to file campaign papers, was the result of legal advice that running for president would require stepping down as chairman of his non-profit organization, American Solutions.

American Solutions? Oh them. Yeah, he'd rather lead that group of fundamentalists than run for the White House. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Newt makes millions from crazy right-wingers and businessmen to run American Solutions, an insanely right-wing organization that's goal is to influence the nomination, election, appointment or defeat of candidates for public office. The group is so far to the right that even Republican Tom Delay is against them......
