Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings' 100 Days, 100 Nights is smoking hot! The album, which drops on October 2nd, should finally place her in the stratosphere of divadom that she deserves to be in. Seriously, go out and pre-order this album. It's amazing and how awesome would it be to see them debut at number. Save Soul Music!!!
Take note Amy Winehouse. If you want to see a real live soul experience, head to the Apollo Theatre on October 6th and get ready to be blown away. It must pain the Dap-Kings to back that hack when she attempts to tour.......

I have been a Sharon Jones fan for years. That said, I prefer Amy's "Back in Black" over Dap Dappin' anyday. The production quality is the best part, not Amy's vocals. The music is raw and stripped with no overblown production. Think Stax over Motown. The Dap Kings are trying to hard to sound like the JBs.
Sharon Jones is a better vocalist than Amy Winehouse, but the musicians that played on Amy's album are a step higher than the Dap Kings. Don't get me wrong, I like the Dap Kings, but Amy's album is superb.

The above poster has got to be joking.
Google up the backing band on Winehouse's latest.
I'll wait.

The Dap Kings backed her up live, not in the studio.

Not all of the Dap Kings played on the album. Tons of UK studio cats on that one. But the biggest difference is the producer Mark Ronson. I like his style much more than I do Bosco's.

The above posters still have to be joking. The bulk of the Winehouse album is played by the Dap-Kings -- in the studio. Read the album credits! On these songs there is no fundamental difference between Ronson's sound from Mann's.

'Think Stax over Motown' -- OK, so why, in the absence of the Dap-Kings, does Winehouse have some tepid session band *replay* 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough,' a Motown production, if I recall correctly, big arrangement and all, for 'Tears Dry on Their Own'?

The more I read the opening comment, the less sense it makes. 'The Dap-Kings are trying to [sic] hard to sound like the JBs.' Huh??? The JBs' drum sound 99% of the time was dry as a bone; the Dap-Kings drum sound is soaked in reverb. The JBs' bass sound was subtle and round; Gabe's is punchy and pointed. Bobby Byrd's piano and organ were always prominent in the JBs' recordings; the Dap-Kings use keyboards only sparingly. Should I go on???

You have to respect personal taste. However the new album is nothing like Dap Dippin' at all. I think the person above likes the sweeter and more polished drum heavy sound of Amy's Album as it sounds more modern. To my ears I prefer the Sound on Naturally.
I dislike the fact that the hi hat and snare is buried on some Daptone productions. As a person with knowledge of sound engineering I edit all of my misic and I tend to bring the tunes up a little brighter.
Interestingly I don't need to do this on Leon Michaels productions (ex Dap Kings Saxophonist) on his Truth and Soul recordings. His El Michaels Affair and Lee Fields productions are the absolute Zenith of hard and heavy (raw) mixed with sweet and slick.
Drums are so important and the Daptone sound opts to bury them a little for my taste, but it's no biggy. Live they sound evn better than album (in a smaller venue) as the drums are often not mic'd.
The production on 'What Condition My Condition Is In'is the nicest sound that they've com up with yet.
This new album has very little in the way of pacey material and sticks to mid tempo and slower material. It's more reminiscent of a mid 60's style as oppossed to the late 60's early 70's style of Naturally.
Maybe the band were trying to branch out?
For me the dissapointment of 'Not Gonna Cry' not being on there and other stuff like b side 'Money Don't Make The Man' is the only major dissapointment. Hopefully a 2nd Daptone Singles Album will be along soon.
By the way, the guitarist 'Tommy Brenneck's' new album BudosII is great!

I like them both Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones. I don't care who played or which is better. They are both much better than Nickleback.

I don't think so. You have to revise your looks. In general your blog is good, but sometimes your posts are creepy.
