HARRY POTTER & THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX | Film Review

potterorder.jpg
Dorks like me are savoring this month. First, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is released today in theatres across the country! Then on July 21st at 12:01AM, the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7), will hit bookstores.

On Monday, I was lucky enough to catch a press screening of Order of the Phoenix.

First time feature film director David Yates had his hands full with Order of the Phoenix. Not only did he tackle the longest of the Potter books, but he also has to follow Alfonso Cuarón's Prisoner of Azkaban and Mike Newell's Goblet of Fire, both of whom brought a depth and darkness to the films that were absent from the first two Chris Columbus directed films.

Full review after the jump.........

Seeing as all the movies leave out numerous key plot points from the books, I'll try and ignore that Yates left out some seemingly essential elements of J.K. Rowling's writings and changed the way the final battle scene goes down. What he did do is squeeze out the books action sequences and present them as the catalyst. The final scene, which will be shown in 3D at IMAX screens, is visually thrilling, but without having read the book, I wouldn't have gotten what the hell is going on.

Yates' world of Potter is eye-candy, fast-paced and doesn't include any down time to build characters. What makes the Potter books so enjoyable is the richness of the stories and the details to the various personalities and emotional baggage of growing up in troubling times.

The decision to keep such vital and intriguing characters as Draco Malfoy and Dolores Umbridge (I wanted to see a lot more of her) in the background seems an obvious mistake. And Luna and Cho's roles are presented in such a limited context that it's hard to find a connection to either of them.

Of course, the main character is Harry Potter and Yates doesn't skimp on him. While Yate's focus' only on the action and not so much character development, he still is able to bring out Potter's teenage angst and the anxiety. The scenes with Harry and Dumbledore are the most promising and I wish there was more of them.

In terms of the five films currently released, this one doesn't quite entertain like Cuarón and Newell's did, but neither does it stink like Columbus' kiddy flicks.....
