CONCERT FOR DIANA | It Ends With Her and Queen

The U.S. broadcast of the Concert For Diana from London's Wembley Stadium ended with a montage of home videos. In a bit of a hysterical fuck you, the music playing over the montage was Queen.

Hmmm. Somehow, I don't think that was a coincidence.........

HAMAS TV | Or How To Raise A Terrorist

mousehamas.jpgHamas has some truly fucked up individuals in their posse:

A Mickey Mouse look-alike who preached Islamic domination on a Hamas-affiliated children's television program was beaten to death in the show's final episode Friday.

In the final skit, the character Farfour was killed by an actor posing as an Israeli official trying to buy Farfour's land. At one point, the mouse called the Israeli a "terrorist."

"Farfour was martyred while defending his land," said Sara, the teen presenter. He was killed "by the killers of children," she added.

"Tomorrow's Pioneers," a weekly show featuring a giant black-and-white rodent with a high-pitched voice, had attracted worldwide attention because the character urged Palestinian children to fight Israel. It was broadcast on Hamas-affiliated Al Aqsa TV.

PJ HARVEY | "White Chalk" on September 24th

PJ Harvey news is always exciting to me. The NME reports that PJ's eighth album, White Chalk, is slated for release on September 24, 2007. Let's hope she previews the new record with small club shows in NYC, the way she did Stories and Uh Huh Her. Those were absolutely fantastic shows.

So much for her retiring......

NEW YORK CITY | New "Noise Code" Takes Effect

New York City's new "Noise Code" is now in effect. Michael Bloomberg's plan to make New York City quieter has some great initiatives and some absolutely ludicrous plans. As a reference point, the American Speech-Language Hearing Association measures a quiet library at 30 decibels. Here's what the new law covers:

  • Owners of animals making noise (ie. dog barking) for five continuous minutes are subject to fines.
  • Bars and restaurants can not exceed 7 decibels when measured 15 feet away on the street (including music, people talking, etc).
  • Drivers can be fined if that music is "plainly audible" from 25 feet.
  • People listening to music on headphones or boombox can not be audible from five feet away.
  • Ice cream truck drivers will have to turn off their music when stopped.
  • Construction companies, before breaking ground on any project, will have have the city approve the noise mitigation plan.
  • Construction companies and city workers must use noise filters over all loud powertools such as jackhammers.
  • Motorcycles whose mufflers or exhaust systems are audible from 200 feet away are prohibited.
  • The decibel level inside you home can not be above 42, down from 45.
  • The one I find most ridiculous is the club rule. Since the city started its smoking ban, forcing patrons to go in front of a venue and constantly open that front door, the street noise has increased. This is clearly noise that is made because of the smoking ban and now bars and clubs are being punished for following the law.

Also, pets bark! What the fuck yo......

POLITICAL JUNK | Report Warns of "Spectacular" Al Qaeda Attack

aug_6_Memo.jpgRemember that infamous August 6, 2001, memo entitled "Osama bin Laden Determined To Strike in US" that President Bush ignored while he was on vacation? Well, it looks like our intelligence agency released a very similiar memo. Here's the story from ABC News:

A secret U.S. law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, warns that al Qaeda is planning a terror "spectacular" this summer, according to a senior official with access to the document.

"This is reminiscent of the warnings and intelligence we were getting in the summer of 2001," the official told ABCNews.com.

As ABCNews.com reported, U.S. law enforcement officials received intelligence reports two weeks ago warning of terror attacks in Glasgow and Prague, the Czech Republic, against "airport infrastructure and aircraft."

The warnings apparently never reached officials in Scotland, who said this weekend they had received "no advance intelligence" that Glasgow might be a target.

While the threat doesn't say that the attack will take place on U.S. soil, this is still truly scary news. So, do you feel safer thanks to President Bush's War on Terror? And which Presidential candidate will best protect Americans from real threats.....

JAMIE T | July 17th at Union Pool

With a few days to spare between UK festivals and rollickin around the streets of his hometown, Jamie T is making a quick stop in New York at Brooklyn's Union Pool on July 17th. Tickets are $10 and now on sale.

Couldn't he play a much bigger venue than Williamsburg's Union Pool? Hmm......

PRESIDENT BUSH | Hands Scotter Libby A Get Out Of Jail Free Card, Most Corrupt Administration In History

What a sick and corrupt government:

President Bush commuted the sentence of former White House aide I. Lewis ''Scooter'' Libby on Monday, sparing him from a 2 1/2-year prison term that Bush said was excessive.

Bush's move came hours after a federal appeals panel ruled Libby could not delay his prison term in the CIA leak case. That meant Libby was likely to have to report to prison soon and put new pressure on the president, who had been sidestepping calls by Libby's allies to pardon the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney.

''I respect the jury's verdict,'' Bush said in a statement. ''But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.''

Bush left intact a $250,000 fine and two years probation for Libby, and Bush said his action still ''leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby.''

This guy Libby outs an undercover CIA operative and Bush lets him walk! This is treason to the highest power. President Bush has once again disgraced America and made a mockery of our legal system. I am outraged. It's time for the Democrats to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney before they can do any more damage to our once great and strong nation.......

    THE SIMPSONS | 7-Eleven Becomes Kwik-E-Mart

    kwik-e_Market.jpg
The Simpsons Movie drops on July 27th. It's time to put that publicity campaign into overdrive:

Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art. Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens in North America will sell items that until now existed only on television: Buzz Cola, KrustyO's cereal and Squishees, the slushy drink knockoff of Slurpees.

Scary how similiar that man looks like Comic Book Guy.......

VIRGIN MEDIA | The Carlyle Group Bids $11.1 Billion

The Carlyle Group has bid $11.1 billion to purchase Virgin Media!

Virgin Media is the television, video-on-demand, internet service provider, telephone and advertising division of Richard Branson's UK based empire. Virgin Airlines, records, books, etc fall under the Virgin Group and would not be owned by The Carlyle Group.

So who are The Carlyle Group? They're a Washington DC based private equity firm with strong Republican ties. They're major war profiteers, as they are one of the largest military contractors in the world. Not to mention that both President Bushs, as well as James Baker III and Donald Rumsfeld, have sat on their board at one-time.

I thought that was sickening until I read that The Carlyle Group also purchased a U.S. health care firm for 6.3 billion dollars. Seeing as Carlyle specializes in leveraged finance buyouts and then working to tear apart the companies in order to "make them more profitable," I can't wait to see what they have planned for Manor Care Inc., the operator of more than 500 long-term care centers.

It's companies like The Carlyle Group that lobby to keep America in wars like the one in Iraq and lobby against universal health care and medicare policies. They're evil men who care more about profit-margins than what's best for the country......

COURTNEY LOVE | "How Dirty Girls Get Clean", July Tour

With Courtney Love's second solo record, currently titled Nobody's Daughter, set for an early fall release, the queen of trashy has redone her website where she's streaming a demo version of "How Dirty Girls Get Clean," the supposed lead-off track that was written with Billy Corgan and Linda Perry.

Also, we've been hearing tons o' rumors about a July U.S. tour. A "surprise" July 22nd New York City date is supposedly in the works. That would mark her first appearance in the city since her infamous shows at Plaid and the Bowery Ballroom in 2004. So far, Love has announced only two of these summer surprise shows: July 4th in Paris and July 9th at Bush Hall in London.

To get tickets to any of her shows, you should sign up to her mailing list at www.courtneylove.com. Tickets will be given out at random........

PRESIDENT BUSH | Reaction to Commuting Libby's Jail Sentence

L2R_Hadley_Libby_Cheney_Bush.jpgSo Conservatives and Republicans keep screaming that President Clinton's pardon's of Marc Rich and Pincus Green, among others, were much worse and more irresponsible than Bush's commuting "Scooter" Libby's jail setence. The thing is, Clinton's pardons were reviewed and approved by legal council on both sides of the aisle, as well as pertinent Judges and District Attorneys. Incidently, "Scooter" Lewis Libby was one of the lawyers that reviewed and approved all of Clinton's pardons.

President Bush sought out no advice from the District Attorney or and of the Judges who oversaw the Libby trail or appeals. Nor did Bush seek expert law advice from an Independent or Democrat. Instead, he once again decided that him and his croonies are above the law.

Here's how political figures and pundits are reacting to Libbygate:

Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald: "In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing."

Amb. Joe Wilson (whose wife is the outed CIA agent): "From my viewpoint, the president has stepped in to short circuit the rule of law and the system of justice in our country. In so doing, he has acknowledged Mr. Libby's guilt for, among other things, obstruction of justice, which by definition is covering up for somebody in a crime. By commuting his sentence, he has brought himself and his office into reasonable suspicion of participation in an obstruction of justice. The commutation of (Libby's) sentence in and of itself is participation in obstruction of justice."

House Republican Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri: "President Bush did the right thing today in commuting the prison term for Scooter Libby. The prison sentence was overly harsh and the punishment did not fit the crime."

Harry Reid: "The President's decision to commute Mr. Libby's sentence is disgraceful. Libby's conviction was the one faint glimmer of accountability for White House efforts to manipulate intelligence and silence critics of the Iraq War. Now, even that small bit of justice has been undone. Judge Walton correctly determined that Libby deserved to be imprisoned for lying about a matter of national security."

Pelosi: "The President’s commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence does not serve justice, condones criminal conduct, and is a betrayal of trust of the American people. The President said he would hold accountable anyone involved in the Valerie Plame leak case. By his action today, the President shows his word is not to be believed. He has abandoned all sense of fairness when it comes to justice, he has failed to uphold the rule of law, and he has failed to hold his Administration accountable."

Mitt Romney: "Wasn't it Bill Clinton who was handing out pardons like lollipops?"

FDL: "Demonstrating his complete contempt for trial by jury, rule of law and his own Department of Justice appointees, George Bush thumbed his nose once again at the very concept of democracy and the Beltway Brahmins are cheering. The dirty unwashed masses who populate our juries are fit to judge each other, but evidently not the ruling class."

Josh Marshall: " There is a conceivable argument --- a very poor one but a conceivable one --- for pardoning Scooter Libby, presumably on the argument that the entire prosecution was political and thus illegitimate. But what conceivable argument does the president have for micromanaging the sentence? To decide that the conviction is appropriate, that probation is appropriate, that a substantial fine is appropriate --- just no prison sentence."

Fred Thompson: "I am very happy for Scooter Libby. I know that this is a great relief to him, his wife and children. While for a long time I have urged a pardon for Scooter, I respect the President's decision. This will allow a good American, who has done a lot for his country, to resume his life."

John Edwards: "In George Bush's America, it is apparently okay to misuse intelligence for political gain, mislead prosecutors and lie to the FBI. George Bush and his cronies think they are above the law and the rest of us live with the consequences. The cause of equal justice in America took a serious blow today."

Rudy Giuliani: "After evaluating the facts, the president came to a reasonable decision and I believe the decision was correct."

Obama: "This decision to commute the sentence of a man who compromised our national security cements the legacy of an Administration characterized by a politics of cynicism and division, one that has consistently placed itself and its ideology above the law."

Hillary Clinton: "Today's decision is yet another example that this Administration simply considers itself above the law. This case arose from the Administration's politicization of national security intelligence and its efforts to punish those who spoke out against its policies. Four years into the Iraq war, Americans are still living with the consequences of this White House's efforts to quell dissent. This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice."

The Washington Post: "We agree that a pardon would have been inappropriate and that the prison sentence of 30 months was excessive. But reducing the sentence to no prison time at all, as Mr. Bush did -- to probation and a large fine -- is not defensible. ... Mr. Bush, while claiming to 'respect the jury's verdict,' failed to explain why he moved from 'excessive' to zero. To commute the entire prison sentence sends the wrong message about the seriousness of that offense."

San Jose Mercury News: "Other presidents have doled out pardons and the like, usually on the way out of office. It's never pretty. But few have placed themselves above the law as Bush, Cheney and friends repeatedly have done by trampling civil liberties and denying due process. Chalk up another point for freedom. Scooter's, at least."

Tony Snow: "In Washington, things get leaked all the time."

DAN DEACON | The Pool Parties Question, Virgin Fest

It felt like it was a hundred degrees outside. No shade. All concrete. Off the stage, just beyond the baracade, Dan Deacon is performing his short set. The crowd can barely see him. Does this look like your idea of a super fun Sunday or does it look like your biggest nightmare?

PRINCE | Three Minneapolis Shows In One Day, Cops Shut Down First Avenue, Complete Setlists

Prince took over Minneapolis on Saturday-Sunday evening.

Around 5pm, he played his first of three shows at Macys. At 10pm, he went on to play the Target Center. And then at 2:45am, he played his first show at Minneapolis' First Avenue nightclub since 1987. This is the club made famous by being the main joint in Purple Rain.

Unfortunately for those at First Avenue, the show got shut down prematurely after the Purple One broke the cities 3am curfew. While police were kind enough to not shove Prince offstage and even let him play until about 3:45am. While that's still a wonderful hour performance, I'm guessing he would have played until at least 5am otherwise.

Throughout the day, Prince covered Amy Winehouse, Gnarls Barkley, The Cars, The Beatles, Sly Stone. He played with Sheila E. He played an amazing acoustic set. He was in top form.

Here's how the unbelievable setlists looked:

    MACY'S
When the Saints Go Marching In (w/o Prince) / 3121 / Girls & Boys /A Love Bizarre (with Sheila E) / Get on the Boat / The Glamorous Life" (with Sheila E) / Take Me with U / Guitar / Crazy" (Gnarls Barkley cover, Shelby J on vocals) / Let's Go Crazy

    TARGET CENTER
Purple Rain / Take Me with U / Guitar / Shhh / Musicology / Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry cover) / Let's Go" (The Cars cover) / Satisfied / What a Wonderful World (instrumental) / Little Red Corvette (solo acoustic) / Raspberry Beret (solo acoustic) / The One U Wanna C (solo acoustic) / Sometimes it Snows in April (solo acoustic) / Seven / Come Together (Beatles cover) / Do Me Baby / I Wanna Be Your Lover / How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? / Diamonds and Pearls -> Cream / U Got the Look / If I Was Your Girlfriend / Black Sweat / Kiss / Let's Go Crazy / A Love Bizarre" (with Sheila E) / Crazy (Gnarls Barkley cover, Shelby J on vocals) / Nothing Compares 2 U / The Glamorous Life" (with Sheila E)

    FIRST AVENUE
3121 / Girls and Boys / I Feel for You / Controversy / Three-Headed Woman / Satisfied / Down by the Riverside / Broken Heart Again / Love Is a Losing Game" (Amy Winehouse cover, Shelby J on vocals) / Love Changes / Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) / Hair / Sing a Simple Song / Everyday People (Sly & The Family Stone cover) / Alphabet St.

KNOCKED UP | Deleted Scenes: "Brokeback Mountain" and "Kuni Gone Wild", Soundtrack of the Year?, Anne Hathaway

Why was this taken out of the movie?!?! So freaking funny.

Take note that Brokeback Mountain's Anne Hathaway was originally cast in the lead role of as "Alison Scott," but dropped out due to creative reasons. In a production note, Judd Apatow wrote that “Hathaway dropped out of the film because she didn’t want to allow us to use real footage of a woman giving birth to create the illusion that she is giving birth.” This may explain why the producers decided to pull the clip, fearing that it would cause a bit of stir with agents, managers, etc.

Also, can I once again go on about how Loudon Wainwright's Strange Weirdos: Music from and Inspired by the Film Knocked Up is one of the best albums of the year! "Grey in L.A." is especially wonderful.........

POLITICAL JUNK | Republican Senator Busted For F***ing Prostitute(s)

vitter_and_Bush.JPGExtreme hypocrite/conservative Senator David Vitter (Republican - Louisiana) has been exposed as one of the D.C.'s Madam's most important clients.

I guess the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee was right when they accused Vitter of having had a lengthy affair with a prostitute in New Orleans. Vitter responded that the allegation was "absolutely and completely untrue" and that it as "just crass Louisiana politics."

Also, in 2000, while Vitter was running for congress and bashing the Clinton's, his wife said, "I'm a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary. If he [Vitter] does something like that, I'm walking away with one thing, and it's not alimony, trust me."

As of now, it's unknown if his wife actually did cut off his dick.......

BAD ART AUCTION | Zach Galifianakis, Band of Horses + McCarren Pool on July 22nd

The Hiro Ballroom was a rocking for New York Magazine's Bad Art Auction hosted by Zach Galifianakis. Amazing, crappy paintings went for a couple of hundred bucks a piece! I was expecting things to sell for like $10, but I'm glad people shelled out for a good cause (New York Cares).

Band of Horses played their first area show since last September and sounded wonderful. They previewed a ton of material from their sophomore album, due for release in October through Sub Pop. Also, they announced that they'll be playing JellyNYC's Pool Parties on July 22nd.......

NYC RADIO | Jack-FM Fails, Oldies Return

NYRADIO.JPGWe are so very happy to hear that CBS has come to their senses and finally dumped Jack-FM shuffle programming from 101.1 in New York City. They have relaunched the personality-driven WCBS, New York's one and only oldies station.

While such legenderary dj's like Cousin Brucie have fled to the wonderful world of Sirius Satellite Radio, Bob Shannon and Dan Taylor will be returning to terrestrial airwaves.

With the demise of WLIR/WDRE, and the continued takeover of radio by Clear Channel, the few tolerable stations in New York City have disappeared over the years. With the exception of WCBS, WNYC and WFUV, New York City had no good music station. It's sad that radio in New York City is so shitty. It's actually kind of pathetic.

When we lost WCBS to the horrible JACK-FM, the outcry was more than audible. It may have taken the numbskulls at CBS awhile to realize that they made a mistake, but I'm glad they finally came to their senses.

Long live the oldies. Long live the dj. Kill the shuffle. Kill the program director...........

HARRY POTTER & THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX | Film Review

    potterorder.jpg
Dorks like me are savoring this month. First, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is released today in theatres across the country! Then on July 21st at 12:01AM, the final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7), will hit bookstores.

On Monday, I was lucky enough to catch a press screening of Order of the Phoenix.

First time feature film director David Yates had his hands full with Order of the Phoenix. Not only did he tackle the longest of the Potter books, but he also has to follow Alfonso Cuarón's Prisoner of Azkaban and Mike Newell's Goblet of Fire, both of whom brought a depth and darkness to the films that were absent from the first two Chris Columbus directed films.

With numerous Republican Senators like Dick Lugar, George Voinovich, Pete Domenici, John Warner, among them, Bush held a press conference this morning to once again let the world know he is going to continue with his failing war in Iraq. He once again connected Al-Qaeda and Iraq, mentioned Iran, and says he doesn't believe the reports that Al Qaeda is stronger than when they attacked America in 2001 and that his surge has completely failed to weaken any insurgents in Iraq.......

COURTNEY LOVE | Hiro Ballroom Review, Setlist

    Courtney_Love_Hiro_6.jpg
Courtney Love did the most shocking thing she possibly could have ever done at the Hiro Ballroom on Thursday evening; she played a normal concert! The peroxide princess' return to New York City was completely without drama.

An anorexic looking Courtney took the stage around 11:30pm with her new backing band in hopes of previewing some of her Linda Perry/Billy Corgan written music. The thing is, it seems that most people don't go to a Courtney Love show to actually see her perform. It's the spectacle, the insanity, the madness that people want. When she simply plays a normal show, like she did last night, the results were beyond sub-par. If she was a nobody playing this music, she'd be playing to an empty room.

And let's talk about how scary she looked! Those bone-thin arms gave me friggin nightmares. If she's not back on the junk, she certainly looks like it. Either that or she's taking way to many diet supplements. She just was all around gross looking. And her voice was weak as fuck. And she's a pisspoor guitarist.

I can't really applaud her for making it through a show without incident. I mean, is that really an accomplishment? Maybe for her, but that's not enough to make her music an accomplishment......

HALL & OATES | Live at Nokia Theatre, Setlist

    HO_NOKIA_3.jpg
I was a bit surprised by how many people skipped the Courtney Love show to see Hall and Oates at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. It turns out that the folks who went to see the Kings of Soft Rock were treated to show that was equally bad.

To say that Hall & Oates was cheesy may be an understatement. My amigo said "It felt like I was at a cool jazz concert. All i wanted was pure 70s or 80s pop songs. Give me my AM radio or my MTV. We left. God. Terrible. Billy Joel 100,000 times better."

They should have just stuck to their classic three-minute pop songs. Ditch the covers. Ditch the new songs. Ditch the "cool" jazz. Just play the greatest hits and leave quietly (photos via jabberjo)........

MICHAEL CERA | Knocked Up, Clark & Michael, Year One, The Long Goodbye, Guru

I'm on a total Michael Cera kick lately. Dude is one of the funniest motherfuckers. Not only was he brilliant as George Michael on Arrested Development, but his forthcoming feature film, Superbad, looks amazing. Then you got the above fake scene, envisioning Cera cast in Seth Rogan's role in Knocked Up. Then you have his absolutely hysterical internet show Clark & Michael, that is possibly one of the funniest things being produced right now.

Also, Cera just landed a gig starring in a film with Jack Black. “Year One” will be produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Harold Ramis.

On top everything, Cera plays in a band called The Long Goodbye and they're pretty good........

CLASSIC ROCK CARES | AC/DC Members To Rock BB Kings

The last time I saw AC/DC, it was at the Roseland Ballroom and it was one of the most awesome shows ever. Brian Johnson may be an arena rocker, but he knows how to work a small room.

Tomorrow, July 17th, Johnson and his AC/DC band mate, bassist Cliff Williams will play B.B. Kings in Manhattan for a "Classic Rock Cares" tour benefiting the John Entwistle Foundation, which raises money for "free music education and instruments for underprivileged children through the public library system." In addition we have also raised money for other charities including the Red Cross, Florida Hurricane Relief Fund and many others. Tickets are $75.

The AC/DC men will be joined by guitarist Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad, former Deep Purple front man, Joe Lynn Turner, and John Entwistle Band drummer, Steve Luongo.........

POLITICAL JUNK | Iraq War, North Korea, WSJ,

    combs.jpg
Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki declared Saturday that Iraqi forces could secure the country on their own any time American troops decided to withdraw. Considering that Iraq is a sovereign nation and that President Bush has said that American troops will be able to return home when Iraqi's can secure their own country, doesn't this seem like an appropriate time to leave........

Negotiating works! North Korea agreed to shut down their nuclear reactors in exchange for 50,000 tons of oil. On Monday, U.N. inspectors confirmed that North Korea shut down it's 5-megawatt nuclear reactor in Yongbyon, one of the five facilities that Pyongyang agreed to close and their sole functioning nuclear reactor.........

Fox bans a condom television ad, saying "it objected to the message that condoms can prevent pregnancy." WTF...........

The White House on Friday appeared resigned to the fact that the Iraqi parliament is going to take August off, even though it has just eight weeks to show progress on military, political and economic benchmarks prescribed by the United States. It's great our soldiers are fighting a war for them..........

The Republican Senate minority continues to fillibuster any vote on Iraq. Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says any vote that fails to reach 60 "Yeas" will be fillibustered by Republicans. I wonder how hyprocriticial those Republicans who wanted to ban the fillibuster feel when they vote to block bills..........

The Senate will pull its first all-night debate on the Iraq war in advance of a vote on whether to bring home combat troops by next spring. The rare, round-the-clock session Tuesday night through Wednesday morning is intended to bait Republicans into an exhaustive debate on the politically unpopular war, as well as punish GOP members for routinely blocking anti-war legislation. "How many sleepless nights have our soldiers and their families had?" said Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill............

Today is the day the Wall Street Journal lost all credibility. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has reached a tentative agreement to buy Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal..........

LES SAVY FAV | New Album and CitySol Pics

lessavyfav-albumcover.jpegAfter six long years of beard maintenance and some babies (see below), Les Savy Fav has finally prepared another album. Let's Stay Friends brings together twelve new tunes, some of which we heard at CitySol this past Saturday. Outside is still the best place to see the band because there is inevitably more stuff for Tim Harrington to climb and rummage through. If you missed that show, you still have a chance to catch them twice in September, right around the time when their album is released on the 18th. There are more photos from his costume selections that evening after the jump.

BrooklynVegan, CitySol, and everyone else involved did a great job making the solar-powered festival happen. It was a great lineup too with bands like Les Savy Fav, Land of Talk, Besnard Lakes, O'death, and OCDJ.

ARAFAT | Palestine Leadership Confirms He Died of AIDS

Barak_Clinton_Arafat.JPGI'm still so happy that Yasir Arafat is dead. Fuck him for the pain he's caused the people he was supposed to be leading. Stealing from their mouths. Taking their money so his family can live in palaces in France. Shunning any peace treaties. Here's some interesting news about his death:

Ahmad Jibril, founder and leader of the Damascus-based Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, revealed a shocking conversation he recently had with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his staff.

Jibril, like many Palestinians, readily accepted the notion that Israel had assassinated Arafat, and wanted the Palestinian Authority to conduct an official investigation concluding as much. The response from Abbas’ aides changed in an instant Jibril’s view of his deceased mentor.

“They were silent, and then one of them said to me: ‘To be honest, the French gave us the medical report, that stated that the cause of [Arafat’s] death was AIDS.’”

Arafat eventually died in a Paris hospital after being airlifted out of Ramallah. Many speculated that the Palestinian leader, who was said to have had numerous homosexual relationships, had in fact contracted AIDS.

A clearly angered Jibril said that Abbas and every other member of Arafat's Fatah faction “should be happy that we got rid of the plague, which had been imposed upon them and upon the Palestinian people. The Fatah movement now has an opportunity to renew itself.”

Interesting that this long-rumored news should finally come out during the week that, seven years ago, Arafat walked away from the Camp David Summit.

Nothing about this in the mainstream press? Hmmmm. Well, at least the gay press is covering it.........

WHITE STRIPES | 10th Anniversary Celebration

As we told you before, The White Stripes played a very special 10th anniversary show at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. There are many reasons why they selected this location, including the fact that the theatre is painted red, black and white, but the true reason seems to be that it's central to many members of the White's extended family.

Following the three hour show, Jack and Meg joined his family, friends and road crew in the venues lobby for an intimate little celebration. They toasted their good fortune, their health and their love. It was a truly unique experience that was made all the more joyous since Jack's 102 year-old aunt was amongst them.

We love the White Stripes (even if their record label does like us) and can't wait to see them at Madison Square Garden.......

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS | Book Seven

    potter7.JPG

At 12:01am on July 21st, the seventh and final Harry Potter book will be released. There are events planned all over the city, here are just a few of them:

  • B&N UNION SQUARE: One of the largest midnight Harry Potter parties in the world. Audiobook voiceman Jim Dale will be reading at 10:30pm and then hosting a trivia contest. Tons of activites and weird performances........

  • HARRY POTTER PLACE: Scholastic will open “Harry Potter Place” on Friday, July 20th at Mercer St. between Prince and Spring. The festivities happen 5pm - 11pm.....

  • LONDON: The biggest event throughout the world will be the "J.K. Rowling and the Moonlight Signing" at London's Natural History Museum. 1,700 fans from around the world will be in attendence and get to have their book signed by the author. You can watch the event live at 6:50pm here.......
  • Also, Israel's ultra-Orthodox minister of trade and industry has threatened to sue any shop opening on the Jewish Sabbath to sell Book 7.

“We must put a limit on the desire to imitate other countries,” he told said. “It is inconceivable that numerous employees will be brought in to allow these events to take place and damage the spirit of Shabbat. I plan to file charges and fine anyone who violates the Hours of Work and Rest Law.”

In spite of this, most Israeli bookstores are willing to face the ire of the religious community and are opening up at 2:01am (12:01am BST) to sell the book..........

MOBY | Related To The Dark Lord?

    Moby_Karl_Rove.JPG
    From today's Page Six:

Moby has an unusual new friend. He told politico.com about how his mom once gave a baby up for adoption and he therefore has a half-brother somewhere. "I jokingly said, 'Maybe it's Karl Rove,' " Moby e-mailed us. After the story appeared online, he got a strange letter from the White House. "The envelope looked as if it was from 1952," he said. The letter was from Rove and said, "Dear Moby (or is that Mr. Moby), It's not me. I have no musical ability and am 19 years older (assuming you're 37). So you can breathe easier. On the other hand, James Carville is musically inclined and bald, too. Do you like crawfish etouffee?" Moby, a liberal vegan, wrote us, "Needless to say I was a bit stunned. A letter from President Bush's brain? The man without whom [Bush] would be doing the alligator on the floor of a Hooters in Biloxi? I was also a bit stunned because the letter was funny."

Yes Moby, big brother is watching you...........

JAMIE T | Union Pool Review and Sirius Show

Jamie T, the DIY genre-bending singer, producer, and bass guitar strummer, played a solo show at Union Pool Tuesday. Descriptions of the UK troubadour's music are hard to pin down because he pulls on many influences from The Clash to The Beastie Boys.

At the show, he was reckless on the bass guitar but spat taut lyrics soaked in cadence and rhyme, which glued the songs together. When singing, sometimes the charming bloke's British accent slurs int
